She was still resting, but her mind needed to focus on something other than her personal life. The Atlantis database was the perfect distraction. She had been working all morning and now her body was screaming for energy. She pushed open the doors to the dining hall and froze. In front of her were Kerry and Anang at the same table. Both women turned their heads toward her, still standing motionless in the doorway. Sam widened her eyes, looked away and left the dining hall as quickly as she had entered. She cursed herself in the hallways and felt like a high school girl again. Anang raised her eyebrows at her behavior, turned her head to her dining companion and was surprised to see her rolling her eyes.
Anang: What?
Kerry, jaded: Never mind.
Anang resumed the conversation: So. Why did you ask to be transferred here?
Kerry grimaced slightly, nervous: I... I can't talk about it.
Notes:
*I remind you that Kerry and Sam's characters were written by men. I'll try to explain what's wrong with these two by opening this storyline*
*Since each character has their own running gags, I thought a running gag between Sam and Kerry might be a good idea, so let's have Sam run into Kerry every time she doesn't expect it.*

He woke up with difficulty. With minimal effort, he reached for his cell phone to find out the time. With his head in the pillow and only one eye - partially - open, he blew out a deep breath then noticed a missed call and a message on his answering machine.
(ANSWERING MACHINE) Daniel: Jack, it's me. Can we meet? I... I'll need you. Okay. Call me back.
Jack pressed "call back" and rubbed his face to wake up: Daniel?
Daniel cleared his throat and in a rambling voice: Hmm. Hi.
Jack: What's going on?
Daniel stammered: I... Could you come over to my place?
Jack straightened up, worried: You all right?
Daniel: Um. No.
Jack tried to silence his brain that was sending him bad memories: Have you been drinking?
Daniel: Hmmmm, yeah.
Jack stood up: Okay. I'll be right there.

Behind her computer, her mind was juggling Kerry, Anang, Jack, and the strange similarity between the report of the condensation module the Atlantis team had found in a City lab and the parallel dimension viewer found in the Milky Way. The function was different, but the design was the same and most importantly, they had learned from Jonas that it could be programmed in many ways.
Kerry entered the lab: I asked what you usually eat.
Sam gasped and turned her head toward the voice. She opened her mouth, surprised to see her place a tray from the Mess in front of her, consisting of a green salad, a bowl of fresh chunky fruit and a blue jello.
Sam, very embarrassed by this attention: Oh my God...Huu... You shouldn't have bothered.
Kerry, sincerely: I'm sorry for the loss of your father.
Sam nodded: Thank you.
Kerry: I didn't expect to see you today. (she tilted her head and added confidentially) You weren't on the schedule.
Sam looked away for a split second: Huh, yes. I needed to get my mind off it.
Kerry stared at her for a few seconds: Look, I love this job. He told me it would be okay, but I can see you're upset about it.
Sam, embarrassed: No, no. Everyth-Everything's fine. (She forced a smile) Really.
Kerry became impatient but kept her composure: Oh, cut the crap. (Sam's smile disappeared) I know it's done. Good for both of you. (Sam looked around, very uncomfortable. She panicked about having this discussion here but remembered that Kerry was in the best position to delete compromising content if it ever came up) It's not just you in this story and I'd like to keep it out of my career. (she moved a hand towards her) Unlike you, I can be replaced in a second. (Sam widened her eyes that she could think that) I don't have your track record and I don't have as many articles in the business and technology press to my credit.
Sam swallowed and nodded sharply: No no, uuuh. No worries.
Kerry smiled wryly and exaggerated her serious tone: Um, I'm in your territory. (Sam winced, Kerry frowned and looked at her, puzzled that she hadn't caught on) I was joking, Colonel. (Sam opened her mouth and looked at her, bewildered. Kerry tilted her head again with an amused smile) I hope the Air Force isn't hiring according to the press.
Sam shook her head quickly and smiled nervously: Sorry about my reaction, I-I-I was caught off guard. (Kerry raised her eyebrows at her anxiety and Sam added again, lower) Sorry.
Kerry questioned her with her eyes, surprised that she apologized: Why? (Sam remained silent and Kerry frowned) It's not like he cheated on me and you didn't know. I think he was trying to move on and... (she looked around for courage) Well, I promised myself I wouldn't be a second choice anymore. (Sam winced and Kerry smiled at her) Are we good?
Sam needed this discussion to end: We're good.
Kerry looked at her for a moment, still puzzled by her reactions. She raised her eyebrows, forced herself to smile, and began to walk towards the exit, much to the relief of the military woman.
Kerry turned around: One more thing. (Sam froze from that second round) You know that security alert my department has set up with the SGC to find out who could potentially be looking into the Program members?
Sam nodded: Yes. (She winced and looked away for a fraction of a second) My ex. I know.

Jack rushed into the living room and grabbed the phone to call the ambulance.
(EARS) Sam to Pete: Just hang in there, okay?
(Sam's EARS) Pete breathed hard: Sam? What just happened?
Jack dialed the SGC and waited.
(EARS) Sam to Pete: I promise, if you make it through this, I will explain everything.
Jack winced at the memory of Narim and Martouf, then prayed that she would not have to go through this again.
Jack, on the phone: Colonel Jack O'Neill 66-789-7876-324, please send an ambulance to 4075 Arborview CT.
Sam heard the call in her earpiece and was reassured. Daniel didn't live far from the SGC, Pete would be taken care of quickly.
Pete smiled slightly: Deal.
They looked at each other for a moment. Inside, Jack joined Daniel who was massaging his temple.
Sam stared and repeated: What are you doing here?
Pete, uncomfortable: I uh... I...
Sam opened her mouth, stunned: You followed me?
Jack froze and wondered if he was going to kill him after all. One more, one less... She was able to handle it, right?
Daniel saw his confusion: Jack?
Sam froze as he realized he had heard and quickly added: We'll talk later. Hang in there.
Jack shook his head at Daniel: Nothing.

Kerry after a few seconds of silence: For the record, (she insisted) I have also been part of the SGC since February.
Sam's face slowly broke down, understanding her words. Damn it. She had done some research on this woman after seeing her in Jack's office, including her age. It was obvious that she had received an alert with her ID as the author of the search. A rookie mistake that she never made before. The list of her blunders was getting longer and longer and she concluded that she had to do something before this list turned into a multi-volume encyclopedia.
Sam swallowed and said softly: Sorry.
Kerry tilted her head and realized that she must be really upset not to have made the connection that she herself had checked her schedule before coming to work today.
Kerry thought it best to leave her alone: Just... If you want any information... Ask me.
Sam nodded sharply, extremely nervous, and Kerry left, for good this time. Sam took a deep breath and rubbed the back of her neck to relax her muscles. She looked down at her tray, cursed herself again and pulled it towards her. She resumed her reading but had to resign herself after three quarters of an hour of fruitless reading: her brain was far too preoccupied. She looked at the time on the screen, wondered if she wasn't going to go to the gym but gave up at the thought of running into other people... Or the same ones. She closed her computer and decided to join Dr. Dang.

*In a lot of fanfic but also in the saga, Carter's character is often written as the sexist concept of "not like other girls/ Not like all other girls". This is a very toxic pattern in its misogyny of (comparing herself) to other women. This was often seen with Carter VS Jack's other conquests. I've already touched on this concept a bit with Carter's internalized sexism towards Anang, I encourage you to read up on it, especially with the sources cited*

The sun was dazzling the park. Food trucks dotted the lawn and various activities for children and adults had been set up. But the greater activity of the weekend that no one wanted to miss was the hot air balloon launch.
The day before, Alexander had offered to meet him there before spending another afternoon at the clinic. She hadn't hesitated long, wanting to minimize the time alone at home right now, and the base was no longer an option. Sitting on a bench away from the crowd, in front of the veterans' memorial, she waited for him, surveying the excitement. A memory of coming to this event a few years ago flooded her. With a picnic lunch in tow, she, Janet and Cassie had admired the reflection of the hot air balloons in the lake. A pleasant evening between two horrible missions. She wondered why she rarely took the initiative for such activities. She was more of a follower or... shirker. Just like yesterday in the dining hall, but more subtle in normal times. Yet in retrospect, these moments felt good, but the idea of engaging in the social activity itself was often complicated and anxiety-provoking for her, whereas working for hours on end felt soothing.
Alexander handed her a coffee: For you.
Sam was startled by the awakening of her thoughts and then took the drink: Oh. Thank you.
Alexander noticed her startle, then pointed to a foodtruck: Your thing is coffee, mine is burritos (Amused, she nodded, then looked at the drink. Alexander saw her lost in thought) Black, no sugar.
Sam emerged and resumed: Thank you.
Alexander: Ready?
Sam stood up: What's the program?
Alexander tilted his head: Isn't it obvious? (she smelled the drink discreetly but the doctor noticed) What are you doing?
Sam froze at having potentially insulted him: Hu. Sorry. (She too frowned, slightly stunned at her own behavior) I don't know why I'm doing this.
Alexander, puzzled: You know that GHB has no smell, right?
Sam, uncomfortable: Yeah.
Alexander reached for the cup: I drink half of it?
Sam widened her eyes: Huuu. No, no. (she felt guilty and took a quick sip) Sorry.
She smiled nervously, he hesitated to continue this topic with her and potentially find the source of this habit.
Sam: So. Psychoanalysis at 1000 meters above ground?
Alexander smiled and walked toward the hot air balloons: I can call Dr. Williams if you'd like (she smiled politely and he glared at her as he walked) You're smart. You're running away from her 'cause you know what she might tell you. That's why you hang out with Anang or me.
Sam frowned at the implication: Anang?
Alexander winced slightly: You know... We're friends first.
Sam gritted her teeth: What exactly did she say?
Alexander frowned and stared at her: Nothing. Why? (he seemed lost) What happened? (she pulled herself together and shook her head so he would forget) Anang is awkward and impulsive, sure, but that's what makes her good at what she does.
Sam, sarcastic: Making trouble?
Alexander frowned again: Fighting for others. (she felt she had insulted his friend and looked away) Like Bell. Like me. (he took a deep breath) And that's what makes us often hated.
Sam, surprised by this extreme statement: "Hated"?
Alexander: We make people face their pain, their trauma... But also their privileges.
Sam, a little confused: Like what?
Alexander shrugged: Like yesterday afternoon at the clinic. Health inequalities, for example.
Sam looked away, uncomfortable: Yeah. (she moved her hand) I mean, I already knew that.
Alexander nodded: This should not be seen as a desire for guilt, but as an opportunity to learn and be responsible in order to work for a more just world.
Sam bit her lip and murmured to herself: I'll go apologize to her. (he questioned her with his eyes and she looked away, realizing that Anang had said nothing to her) Nothing.
Alexander guessed she was lying and grinned: Don't blame the others for you... Push yourself a bit. They're just looking for a reaction. In an awkward way, of course. (He pointed at her) You are within your rights to say "no". (she nodded gently) Anang forgets that sometimes.
Sam raised her eyebrows and added with a touch of sarcasm: A big fan of confrontation.
Alexander dodged a smile: Bell is different. Her job is to listen, but she will respect your silence.
She nodded and swallowed. Their turn to climb into a hot air balloon came, to the great relief of the military woman: this conversation would subside a little during the safety instructions and the take-off. She threw away the empty cup before the balloon went up in the air and thanked him, awkwardly, one last time. In the air, she put her elbows on the edge to enjoy the view and the fresh air.
Alexander imitated her position next to her: You okay?
Sam: Yeah. (he looked at her intensely and she became uncomfortable lying to him) Nightmares. (she tilted her head) Anxiety attacks, anger and flashbacks. I feel tired and find it harder and harder to concentrate.
Alexander nodded: You've been controlling your emotions for so many years that it's created hypervigilance. Long-term hypervigilance is destructive to your mental and physical health. Your brain and body are in a constant state of defense and attack, no rest-
Sam: Lots of coffee?
Alexandra smiled and nodded: Receiving continuous danger information leads to stress, fatigue, anxiety, ulcers, cancer-
Sam nodded with a small smile: Okay okay, my classes are coming back to me.
Alexandra blew out his nose, then resumed: Suicidal thoughts?
Sam shook her head: No. (He looked at her to see if she was lying and she smiled softly) Even if some days are harder than others... Not for several years.
Alexander nodded and looked at the horizon: Try to trust your instincts more and...
Sam, with a touch of sarcasm: Take it easy?
Alexander: Or get High. (She turned her head to him sharply and he chuckled) Sorry. I've had that joke since we took off. You're in the Air Force, (he moved his hand towards the cockpit then the sky) hot air balloon...
Sam smiled to reassure him: Good one.
Alexander pulled himself together: Far from high professional consulting…
Sam tilted her head: Pretty ballsy, yeah.
Alexander smiled at the joke, reassured that she didn't take it the wrong way: Good one. (he moved his hand) It's also a doctor's joke. (she questioned him with her eyes) To cure yourself you have to take medicine and go to therapy. That's all. (she looked down, it sounded simple when you put it that way, but it was much harder to live it) It's not sunbathing or yoga or anything else that will cure you. (she raised her head and looked at him) Go tell a cancer patient to relax instead of taking chemo, or a diabetic to swap his insulin for a vacation.
Sam smiled weakly: Yeah.
They watched the view for several minutes. The balloon began to lose altitude for a return to reality on the ground.
Sam broke the silence: Doctor? (he turned his head to her) Could you ask Dr. Williams to come back to our next session?
Alexander pointed to a truck: Only if you come with me to this burrito truck. I'm starving!

Notes:
*The hot air balloon activity in Colorado Springs is inspired by this event (source)*
*Many times Sam checks her drinks in the saga before drinking them, except with people she trusts. This is something I inserted in my part 1, Jack hands her a coffee, she doesn't sniff it and drinks it straight. These are mechanisms that can set up people who have been sexually abused especially with GHB. But it is also the kind of "lesson" that we as women have learned to protect ourselves. It is again putting the responsibility of not assaulting on women instead of putting the responsibility on men not to assault. I know in the show it's not told that way but to emphasize her military training except that O'neill rarely does it and the other military never Remember in my part 1 on Chalcis, she drinks an opium based drink*.
*Remember in 5x03 "ascension" Sam is stressed, Hammond orders her to take it easy when she wants to work, Jack advises her to take up knitting, golf etc. No one questioned why she was taking refuge in work so much at this point. It would have been necessary for her superiors to look more deeply into the reason for this desire to flee her personal/leisure life*
*Reminder of my previous chapter: when Dang tells her that she hangs out with Anang in this one, I create a quid pro quo. Dang doesn't know what happened at Sam's house, but he had asked Anang to talk to her right after her work suspension. That Sam doesn't know.*

Kerry knocked on the door: Hey. Can I come in?
Jack looked up at her and nodded: Hey. (He twitched at her expression and saw the file in her arms) What's going on?
Kerry, nervous: An alert for an incident yesterday off base. (She handed him the file) I did a thorough investigation and... (He opened the file and his face broke down as he read it. She swallowed and hesitated) Sorry my department didn't notice it before.

Sitting at a table in the library, Bell was reading some reports and spotted Daniel in an alley.
Bell: Dr. Jackson?
Daniel turned his head to her: Oh. (a little nervously) Hello.
Bell smiled at him: Hello. Forgive my curiosity. (he abandoned his research and approached her) Have you ever visited utopian worlds?
Daniel crossed his arms and thought: Argos. (Bell looked away, uncomfortable, but Daniel didn't see it) Oh. There are the Nox but we could never visit their city.
Bell nodded and smiled: I've read the reports on them, yes.
Daniel continued to think: Once we came across what was supposed to be a paradise. It had been created to invite all civilizations that wanted to live in peace.
Bell raised her eyebrows: Great?
Daniel winced: Euuurrrh... A goa'uld infiltrated them. Everyone ended up killing each other.
Bell swallowed and added softly: That sums up the fate of our universe.
Daniel looked at her and saw her confusion: Gandhi said "the difference between the possible and the impossible is in the determination.
Bell nodded, unconvinced: Gandhi was a racist, negrophobic and pedocriminal.
Daniel hung his head, embarrassed: Ha. Sorry. (He smiled nervously) I'll stop making quotes in your presence from now on.
Bell dodged a smile: Stop it at all or (she glanced at the shelves) look for better sources. (he smiled and she picked herself up) And you relocate refugees to other worlds?
Daniel nodded: When necessary, yes.
Bell: Earthlings?
Daniel: We have sites. (she seemed enthusiastic about the idea) Don't get carried away, it's mostly the same as here. They're using the site as a training ground, an operating ground, or a research ground.
Bell: Ha.
Daniel, amused: You want to build a better world?
Bell smiled: Isn't that what everyone wants?
Daniel raised his eyebrows: Not really. (they exchanged a wry smile) Oma Desala said that there is only one thing we can ever truly control.
She opened her mouth, Daniel expected to relive a memory and could already hear her asking, "And what is that?" or that she pointed out that he had just made a quote.
Bell: "Desala?"
Daniel raised his eyebrows, unsettled: Hmm. "Nature." It means "Nature."
Bell shook her head and corrected: "Mother Nature. (He nodded, validating what he already knew, and Bell took a curious tone) Who is this person?
Daniel: The Ascended being who helped me with my own Ascension.
Bell made a silent "Ha", then continued: Was she black?
Daniel frowned, stunned: No? (he tilted his head) White.
Bell smiled wryly again: Great. Another colonizer.
Daniel tilted his head and grinned: Well... Apparently Ancients lived on Earth long before us, so... (she smiled that he understood the reference and nodded several times, he put his glasses back on his nose properly) But she never said she was an Ancient either... (Bell nodded to invite him to resituate the conversation) She said that the only thing we have absolute control over is choosing between good and evil.
Bell: So her people always chose good?
Daniel grinned: I wouldn't say that. Most of them are Ancients and they like neutrality.
Bell gave him a jaded look: Neutrality serves the oppressor.
Daniel thought about the Ascended doing nothing in the face of Anubis and nodded: Elie Wiesel, right? Nobel Peace Prize winner?
Bell nodded: So did Desmond Tutu. Nobel Peace Prize winner too.
Daniel waved his hand: There are many reports of the Ancients if you like.
Bell: I haven't read it all yet and I'll tell you, it's not exactly the keywords I'm looking for for my work. It was curiosity.
SPEAKER: Sergeant Mehra is expected in the control room.
Bell winced at the time on her watch: Oops. I'm going to be late, I'll leave you to it. (She smiled at him and stood up.) Thanks for the talk, Doctor.

Bell: Do you think you're isolating yourself emotionally and socially?
Sam froze and glanced suspiciously at Alexander, wondering if this had anything to do with their conversation in the park. He frowned and questioned her with his eyes.
Sam pulled herself together: Not easy when all the people you love are dying around you.
Bell: Hmm. You think you're responsible?
Sam looked away, confused by an echo of Jack telling her the same thing: No.
Bell: But you still run away from relationships?
Sam frowned: No.
Bell: Any news about your brother?
Sam looked away again: No.
Bell threw a glance towards Alexander. The latter grimaced slightly then encouraged Sam with a glance. She moistened her lips with nervousness and sat up.
Bell ventured a final question: Are you in a relationship right now?
Sam became impatient: How about we stop lying to each other, Doctor?
They stared at each other.
Bell: All right. I was hired by General O'Neill because he seemed to be concerned about his staff, especially the women in his unit. (she insisted) For one in particular. In light of recent events, I believe it's you, Colonel. (Sam didn't move an inch) He seemed very interested in understanding the mechanisms of post-traumatic stress disorder due to sexual violence in the Army.
Sam felt like he had been stabbed in the heart, so her doubts were well founded. Alexander's face gradually decomposed. He had his suspicions, but hearing him was different.
Bell: If you have experienced trauma, just acknowledging it and admitting it is a big step. We can help you with that.
Sam shook her head: No, you can't.
Bell gently replied: I think I know my job.
Sam: You don't understand. (She insisted) I don't even know if this is real.
Alexander: During trauma, the brain creates false memories.
Bell: Dissociation also gives this impression. (Sam shook her head and grew impatient, knowing this for a fact) To differentiate them, therapy can help.
She remained silent and gritted her teeth.
Alexander tried: Trauma is reflected in reactions, not memories.
She understood that he was referring to her admission of having nightmares and seizures while they were in that hot air balloon, and he encouraged her again with a shake of his head.
Sam continued more calmly: That's not my point. These memories may be false. Really false. This has happened before.
Alexander: What do you mean?
Sam: These may very well be Fifth's creations implanted during his torture to make me weak. Vulnerable.
Alexander frowned: But to what end?
Sam shrugged: To get me to reject the Air Force and this program to validate his artificial world? To convince me to stay with him? To control me? To... They found Daniel already seated at the table, equally surprised by the presence of Sam accompanying them.
Sam: What's going on?
Daniel: I have no idea. (he moved a paper) I just need a signature but (he glanced at the glass desk) it's been busy for 30 minutes.
The group turned their heads and saw the door open.
Jack, a folder in hand, firmly said: Sit down. (The tension rose and the uninvited people wondered if it was a good idea to be here. Jack looked at Anang) Can you explain where you got the scar on your shoulder, Mrs. Medweganoonind? (There was a strange silence. Sam raised her eyebrows, curious how he was going to justify seeing it and how it required a meeting) Or should I call you (he read the file) "Livingston"?
Anang froze. Eyes darted around the table.
Daniel, lost: Jack. What's going on?
Jack pressed Anang: Your bullet wound. 1992? (she remained silent and gritted her teeth. He turned his head to Alexander) Doctor?
Alexander froze in his turn: How-
Bell put a hand on his to invite him to be quiet, which did not escape the rest of the assembly.
Jack read the file aloud: Mrs. Livingston Marie. Born March 1966, day unknown. (sarcastically) Good start. (he resumed reading) Place unknown. (he waved his hand to emphasize this information and continued) Adopted in 1976 in California.
For the moment, there was nothing exceptional that could explain his behavior. Sam and Daniel remained perplexed, but as the others became more concerned, their curiosity grew.
Jack: No known addresses since 1988. (he imitated a magical disappearance) Poof! Let's jump back in time a bit. Arrest warrant issued yesterday of Pueblo.
Daniel frowned: Pueblo? (he juggled his gaze between Anang/Marie and Jack) The city next door?
Anang/Marie to Daniel: Anasazi.
Jack did not notice this exchange and addressed her: Are we sightseeing in Colorado?
Anang/Marie glared at him.
Daniel: What... (clears his throat) The reason for this arrest warrant?
Jack: Vandalism.
Daniel raised his eyebrows and wondered if all this drama was necessary, but he sensed Anang/Marie's annoyance and the growing concern of the two doctors.
Sam was even more puzzled: "Vandalism, sir?
Jack gave them the arrest warrant: Damage to public property.
Daniel read the paper aloud: "The events took place Sunday night. The statue of Christopher Columbus in front of the library was found covered with red paint."
Jack to Anang/Marie: Anything to say in your defense, Marie?
Anang/Marie looked up at him: They're putting surveillance cameras on the libraries now?
He gritted his teeth at her impertinence. Bell and Alexander glanced at her to keep her on her toes.
Daniel closed the file: What? That's it?
Jack, surprised: Daniel?
Daniel: It'll be cleaned up quickly, Jack. (He moved his hand) It's just symbolic.
Jack: "Symbolic"?
Daniel put his glasses back on properly: Well, Colombia is called that because of Christopher Columbus. America is called that because of Amerigo Vespucci. Both of them made history for their (he made quotation marks with his fingers) "discoveries" but-
Anang/Marie: You didn't discover anything. We were there before.
Daniel nodded and looked at him. Sam raised her eyebrows and smiled softly, slightly amused by her reply. Jack seemed to have lost his way in this discussion and emerged.
Jack turned his attention back to the file: Before. Okay. Let's go back. 1992 (Anang/Marie closed her eyes) Warrant for the arrest of Marie Livingson for the murder of two police officers and the attempted murder of a third in Los Angeles while on duty.
Daniel and Sam: What?!
Alexander grumbled: To save an innocent.
Jack: And we're back to that famous shoulder Mrs. Livingston because our dear Doctor Dang was there.
Alexander became angry: Thằng chó đẻ!
Anang/Marie fulminated.
Jack: Right? 1992? Los Angeles. Is that what you told me?
Bell closed her eyes and felt that it was all her fault. Her fault that they were there. Anang/Marie stared at Bell and realized that this detail had escaped her and that she felt responsible.
Anang/Marie gritted her teeth and turned to Jack: You've been doing research on us?!
Daniel and Sam looked at each other, rather surprised that she had only now been pinned down.
Jack dropped the file on the table: And you lied to us. We're even. (To Alexander) Remind me what the procedure is for all medical gunshot wounds, Doc? (He didn't have to answer, they all knew he had to report it to the police) Which makes you an accomplice in the eyes of the law.
Daniel grabbed the file: That's not possible.
Sam leaned over to read with him. Jack gestured to two soldiers in the background.
Jack: Mrs. Livingston and Dr. Dang, you are under arrest.
Bell protested: No!
The two doctors and Anang/Marie stood up. Sam and Daniel looked up at them, stunned at the turn of events.
Jack glared at Bell: I suggest you keep your mouth shut if you don't wanna join them as an accomplice.
Bell glared at him, but the man thought nothing less of her. He considered this whole thing to be her responsibility since she had advised them on the team, potentially endangering the program. One of the two soldiers wanted to take Anang/Marie's arm to invite her to follow them but she struggled. Daniel and Sam quickly stood up, knowing the reaction of some of the soldiers.
Anang/Marie: Get your hands off me!
She tried once again to extricate herself from the hold of the soldier and the other one already moved back a step, the hand on his weapon. Jack lost all patience with her resistance and slammed her face down on the table. The rest of the audience froze in shock except for the two soldiers who drew their weapons.
Alexander: Anang!
Daniel ran between the soldiers and them: Hold your fire! Hold your fire!
Jack gestured to one of the soldiers: Handcuffs.
Anang/Marie angrily: And you? Let's do the accounts? How many people have you already killed? (he attached the first handcuff) How many to save a life?
Jack raised his voice and fastened the second handcuff: This has nothing to do with!
Anang/Marie, sarcastically: Because you have a permit?
He banged on the table in turn to avoid hitting her.
Daniel gasped: Wow!
A flash of memory from RepliCarter's mind overwhelmed the archaeologist. Sam froze and thought about what he had said about his mother. She thought her heart would burst through her rib cage. She wondered where all her years of training to control her emotions in such situations had gone and concluded that she was really not well: She was unable to move or say anything. Petrified. This panicked her and brought back other memories. Jonas. She closed her eyes and tried to push the horrors out of her head.
Daniel stared at Jack, shocked: Oh my God. You killed him. (The whole assembly turned its head towards him) Alar.
Sam's mouth dropped open as he realized he had just seen this vision and Daniel turned his head to her, stunned that she had hidden this. Jack gritted his teeth and emerged feeling Anang/Marie struggle slightly in his grip.
Anang/Marie was straightened up by Jack: Revolutions are never made without a fight!
Jack: You will be taken to Peterson and handed over to the local department. (to one of the soldiers) Lock them up. Separately.
Daniel: Jack.
Jack turned to him: Daniel (firmly) Shut up.
The two friends did not take their eyes off each other and a heavy silence fell.
Bell tried to look as calm as possible: May I go?
Jack turned his head towards her: I advise you to.
She headed for the exit.
Daniel emerged: I...I'm coming with you.
He left the room, Jack gathered his files and saw her staring at him.
Jack, alerted her to her insubordination: A problem, Colonel? (she felt as if she had a stranger in front of her and was unable to say anything. Then he turned his attention back to the files in his hands) So dism-

Then he turned his attention back to the files in his hands) So dism-
SPEAKER: Unscheduled Gate Activation!
He looked up at her and they completely forgot that she was not on active duty.
Sam emerged and dashed for the stairs: Who is out there?
Jack released the files on the table and followed her closely: No one expected for hours.

The embarkation room was in turmoil. Several injured people came through the gate. Sam and another soldier were busy dispatching them according to their condition. A miner emerged from the wormhole, his face scrunched up in pain, supported by two partially injured men. He restrained himself from screaming every time one of his legs hit the ground. In the corridor, a medical team arrived with two stretchers.
A sergeant took off his helmet and touched his head at the wound: Another seriously injured man was not far behind us, Colonel.
Sam nodded in his direction: Report to the infirmary.
She turned her head toward the gate and walked toward a group of arrivals.
The sergeant removed his hand from her wound: No, I'm fine. I can help.
Sam turned her head toward the man: You need a CAT scan and stitches. (the man opened his mouth to retort but she took a sharp tone) That's an order, Sergeant.
The subordinate finally obeyed and disappeared into the gray and green corridors. An unconscious miner walked through the door, supported by one of her colleagues and Colonel Edwards. Both men looked exhausted from carrying her. The woman had blood, dirt and mud all over her uniform. At the end of their strength, they placed her as gently as possible on the catwalk. Sam rushed to take her pulse.
Edwards: Unconscious for a few minutes.
She tore away the weakened shreds of cloth and uncovered her wound. Blood was pouring out of her abdomen and she pressed hard on the wound.
Sam yelled: She's hemorrhaging! (Two soldiers helped her onto the stretcher. She straddled the still unconscious woman.) She needs emergency surgery!
One of the nurses attending to another wounded man confirmed the order to one of the soldiers: Go! Go! Go! Go!
The stretcher zigzagged as quickly as possible between the corridors. Jack entered the room.
Dr. Menard came through the door, walked toward him, holding his shoulder: I'm the last evacuator for the moment, sir. Hurry! Hurry!
Jack quickly turned his head toward the control room: Walter!
The sergeant activated the command and the vortex evaporated.
(microphone) Walter: Activation sequence in progress.
Jack to Edwards: Report, Colonel.
(microphone) Walter: Chevron one, encoded.
Edwards: Twelve are untransportable but accessible. A hundred are still trapped in the mine. Operatives stayed behind to try to free them.
(microphone) Walter: Chevron 2, encoded.
Jack: Get yourself checked out and go back to the site if you're cleared to run the operation.
Edwards nodded: Yes, sir.
Jack turned his head and saw a nurse examining Dr. Menard's shoulder. He frowned at a strange sense of déjà vu. Something about a mine, a shoulder... Shoulder! Hell, he had just made Anang/Marie stop talking about her shoulder injury. He wondered if some cosmic God was screwing with him. The Doctor sent the medic back to other more important injuries when he was done putting it back together.
Jack came to his senses: Your shoulder?
Dr. Menard shook his head: Dislocated only. I wanted to stay but they told me to come back... (he looked at his arm and insisted) I know the terrain, sir. I've been following this operation from the beginning.
(microphone) Walter: Chevron 3, encoded.
Dr. Menard lower, slightly shocked: I... This is not normal. This shouldn't have happened.
Jack nodded and approached the SG-M, SG-2 and 4 teams practically in position on the other side of the room.
(microphone) Walter: Chevron 4 encoded.
Jack noticed that the doctor was following him, perceived his shock and guilt: Have Walter put you in touch with the ME (he nodded toward his arm that was supporting his shoulder) and go splint that shoulder.
Dr. Menard nodded and left: Yes sir.
(microphone) Walter: Chevron 5 encoded.
Jack to SG-M and SGs: SG-2 you will be in charge of SG-4 and protecting the SG-M teams here...
(microphone) Walter: Chevron 6 encoded.
More medics came running in and positioned themselves in the group of SG-M teams as they finished zipping up their vests or readjusting their medical equipment bags.
Jack continued: ... Twelve untransportable critical injuries are waiting for you, a hundred are still under the rubble. The ME will come to assist you in a few minutes after you pass.
(microphone) Walter: Chevron 7 launched.
Eyes crinkled as the wormhole formed.
Jack: Then we'll alternate calls between us every three minutes. We're counting on you. Bring our people home.
Ferretti to group: Go! Go! Go!
The teams set off at once.
(microphone) Walter: ME has just arrived, Sir.
Jack nodded through the window: Brief them and get them on their way. I'll be there in 10 minutes.
He ran down the corridors.
Notes:
*We'll come back to this later, but if I put the exchange between the injured man wanting to help and Sam having to tell him twice with emphasis to go get treatment it is not trivial. It's very regular that an order she gives is challenged and she has to justify it to be obeyed while her male colleagues don't have this problem. I'll come back to this in a future chapter with a video montage of all the times it happens*

Sam was still straddling the woman, her hands covered in blood, practically in her guts. Several people in medical garb were busy on all sides, preparing the operating room. Two nurses were changing blood-soaked compresses around Sam's fingers every 10 seconds.
Dr. Brightman helped the nurses hook up the machines and addressed Sam: Hold your pressure. (to a nurse) We need B-negative in here! (to another nurse) Simms?
Nurse: At the Pentagon for the day.
A nurse gave blood bags to a colleague who was finishing setting up an IV.
Sam panicked at how long it was taking: Doctor!
Dr. Brightman swore: I know I know! (to the nurse) Warner? Carmichael?
The nurse quickly: At the Academy Hospital.
Dr. Brightman grunted: She can't wait. (Jack entered the room) She needs to go into surgery NOW!
Sam to Nurse: Get Dr. Dang.
The nurse lunged for the phone but Jack raised his hand to stop her.
Jack gritted his teeth, to Sam: Carter.
Dr. Brightman snapped: Why wasn't I told he was here?
Jack: He's locked up.
Dr. Brightman very quickly: Why?
Jack: Complicity.
Sam: Failure to comply with the duty to disclose gunshot wounds.
Jack got really angry: CARTER!
Sam tried to keep her composure, her hands on the woman's belly: General, I am not a surgeon!
He frowned at her obvious and unsolicited reflection.
Jack to the Doctor: Operate her!
The chief medical officer remained fixed and did not lend him any intention. The nurse juggled her gaze between the General, her department head, Sam and the patient, waiting for orders, slightly panicked.
Dr. Brightman to a soldier standing behind: Bring him here NOW!
The soldier disappeared: Yes, ma'am.
Jack got angry: Oh for crying out loud, operate her yourself!
Dr. Brightman glared at him: That's my sister! (he froze in shock and the doctor gritted her teeth to hold back her emotions) Now go out and hire me the extra staff I asked you for a month ago.
He left the infirmary with an urge to vomit. His legs continued to move on their own, his thoughts wondering why he was in the infirmary and not at his post. Daniel and Sam passed each other on the way to the briefing room. Daniel swallowed at her bloodstained uniform. She'd had time to wash her hands but no to change.

Daniel found the courage to speak up to protect her: Jack. You know what happened in those riots. It was chaos. Does it seem so unthinkable to you that she just wanted to save a civilian from being lynched?

Anise/Freya walked through the wormhole accompanied by another Tok'ra carrying the machine. At the end of the ramp stood Jack, Daniel and Sam.
Jack rolled his eyes and muttered to himself: Why me? (to Daniel and Sam) Why her?
Daniel turned his head towards him and a memory of a conversation about Anise/Freya came back to him.
Freya to the group: I bring you greetings from the Tok'ra High Council.
Daniel emerged: It is good to see you again. Welcome back and thank you for responding to our request so quickly.
Both Tok'ra bowed their heads. Freya froze in front of the bloody clothes of the soldier.
Sam swallowed and composed herself: Hu. It's not mine.
Jack: Accident on one of our mining bases.
Freya nodded and addressed her: Colonel Carter, I am so sorry for your loss. Selmak and your father will always be remembered by the Tok'ra.

Bell and Anang/Marie were escorted out when the two Tok'ra had finished setting up.
Anang/Marie entered the room and saw the seat facing the unknown machine: No no no no... (she turned to them and exclaimed) I am not sitting on that! (she looked at her friend, terrified) Bell!
Bell seemed shocked, unable to react.
Daniel understood the misunderstanding and raised his hands: No no no no! It's okay! It's okay! It's not what you think. It's a kind of lie detector. Everyone on this base has had to deal with this device.
Anang/Marie gritted her teeth with hatred, still terrified: And you can't just try to believe the victims?
Daniel grimaced: It's complicated.
Anise/Marie grunted: Try harder!
Anise: The process is painless. No harm will come to you.
Anang continued to shake her head in fear and silently pleaded with Daniel and Bell. Daniel winced again and looked at Sam.
Sam moved decisively towards the chair and addressed Anise: Go ahead.
Everyone froze and exchanged glances.
Daniel: Sam?
Sam: It's okay, Daniel.
Daniel, cautious : I doubt that Jack would have accepted for yourself.
Anise/Marie pointed at him: Ha! See? I'm not sitting on this. I want a lawyer. (she looked at Bell, doubtful) I have the right to a lawyer, hmm?
Bell opened her mouth but Sam intervened before she could answer.
Sam to Anise: Do it. She has the right to know what to expect. (she moistened her lips in nervousness and looked at Bell) And I need to know something.

The vibration of her cell phone woke her up. With difficulty, Janet retrieved it from the bedside table and squinted at the light from the device. She read the message, sat up and got out of bed. She opened her front door and saw Sam, in sweatpants and a zip-up sweatshirt, begging her not to comment.
Janet stepped aside to let her in and whispered so as not to wake Cassie: Come in, come in.
A few minutes later and back in bed, Janet hugged her and tried to calm the tears she had been holding back for several hours.
Janet stroked her hair: It's all right. Shhh. It's all right.

A few minutes passed as Bell asked the Tok'ra about the machine, concerned for Anang/Marie's safety. Daniel tried to comfort and reassure her as best he could.
Jack entered the room, annoyed: You really want me to kick your ass out of the Air Force myself, Colonel?
Sam: I need to know. And Mrs. Medweganoonind doesn't seem to be cooperating.
Jack glanced at Anang/Marie: That can be arranged.
Daniel gritted his teeth: Jack.
Sam: I want to do it, sir.
Jack, more quietly, skeptical: You wanna go through that again?
Daniel frowned as a memory of Replicator flashed before his eyes: Teal'c and Janet in this very room, with Anise giving her two friends their Zatarc test. He stared at them and understood the trauma of having to reveal their feelings for each other that day. A horrible sensation emerged in the body of the archaeologist. An unbearable feeling, a stolen hidden truth, a ripped consent. He began to pant more and more and knew why their relationship had changed since then.
Anang/Marie, beside him, stared at him and whispered: You okay?
Daniel took some time to take in the information: Yeah, I'm... Yeah.
Jack moved closer to her, more and more worried.
Sam looked at Jack intensely to reassure him: Yes, sir.
Jack shook his head, low: Carter.
Sam insisted: I need to know.
Jack hesitated and whispered: On that matter, (he nodded subtly to the Tok'ra) this is not the best choice.
He looked at her intently to make his thoughts clear. Indeed, the Tok'ra had kissed him twice in surprise. Not sure she understood the subtleties of the Tauri's consent. Sam was left with the idea that they must have revealed their feelings for each other.
Sam murmured: I know.
He winced at not being able to make himself understood.
Bell stepped forward cautiously: I'll be there. (he looked up at her) I... I can be there. (Sam nodded towards her and smiled weakly, grateful. Bell looked at him) If you'll allow me. Sir.
He seemed lost in thought.
Daniel, having regained his senses, approached: Jack? (he looked at him, Daniel winced and added cautiously) It's her choice.
Sam understood by his choice of words that he must have had a memory of RepliCarter and swallowed. Daniel insisted his gaze on his friend so that he understood it too. Jack continued to think, swallowed and finally nodded. After all, Dr. Williams knew about non-consent.
Bell to Sam, hesitating: Is that... Who do you want in the room?
Sam: The minimum. (she glanced at Anang/Marie) She stays.
Daniel left the room to show his support without the slightest objection, she breathed softly in relief then looked at Jack and shook her head negatively as quietly as possible. He gritted his teeth and walked away. Anise nodded to her assistant who also left.
Anise/Marie approached cautiously: Sam. I... I don't know what's going on but... Don't do this for me. For the lawyer I... (she looked at her intensely so she would understand her implication) I won't say anything that would put you in danger. The program or you. (she hesitated and looked at the camera) I... I'm doing it, it's okay.
Sam sat back and looked at Anise with determination: Go ahead.
Anang/Marie wanted to insist, but Bell grabbed her arm and shook her head. Anise approached Sam and placed the device on her temple.

Upon his return from Dakara, Daniel explained the unusual excitement of the base to Teal'c. They were now trying to convince their mutual friend to listen to what the archaeologist had to say.
Daniel: Jack.
Jack: Daniel.
Daniel sharply: You hate her because she is like us. (he repeated Anang/Marie's words) "Revolutions are never made without a fight!"? (he moved a hand towards him) You are the kind of person who understands that.
Jack insisted and repeated to himself: We're not judges, Daniel.
Teal'c: We regularly intervene in the affairs of other worlds.
Jack tilted his head: When we are responsible.
Teal'c: Those responsibilities are born when we cross their worlds. The values we promote come from right here.
Daniel waved his hand at Teal'c and nodded: And you know who's pulling the strings. (sharply) You really think she'd do that on purpose? Perhaps she-she-she-she was really protecting this stranger. (he swallowed and hesitated) And maybe you're- (Jack raised his eyebrows at his potential future accusation but Daniel resumed more calmly) We're... kind of all stressed out right now.
Sam and Anise/Freyja returned at that moment. Daniel, Jack and Teal'c immediately turned their heads toward them. Their colleague swallowed and nodded to indicate that it was real. Daniel and Jack closed their eyes in shock. Teal'c raised an eyebrow, puzzled, and wondered if this meant that Anang/Marie was guilty.
Anise to Jack: Your prisoner seems to have told the truth. She acted to save this stranger.
Daniel: Thank you for your help.
Anise bowed her head to them and Freya spoke again: General O'Neill. I hope to have a little more time next time to deepen our relationship.
He froze, Daniel raised his eyebrows, Teal'c his, and Sam juggled her gaze between the two of them.
Jack cleared his throat: Eurrh. Timing. (He nervously pulled himself together and motioned with his hand toward the control room stairs) Don't want to hold ya up. Your time is limited.
The Tok'ra headed for the control room to find her assistant. Sam questioned Jack, but he seemed very interested in a scratch on the table.
Daniel refocused the subject: And as for the vandalism Jack, (he spread his arms wide) it's just a statue.
Jack, unconvinced: You said it yourself that it was a symbol. (more sharply) And what? We're suppressing history now? (with a touch of cynicism) Isn't it a bit ironic for an archaeologist to have this kinda talk, Doctor Artifact? Do I have to remind you how many times you lecture us when we destroy one of your beloved rocks?
Daniel frowned and grew impatient: This isn't about suppressing a part of our history, Jack. It's about thinking about who is telling the story. (he moved his hand) Put yourself in the shoes of all those descendants of massacred peoples, for God's sake! We're glorifying people who are responsible for genocide. How would you feel if you walked past this statue every morning in their place?
Teal'c noticed Jack's skepticism and clenched his jaw a few times: People who submit to the false gods destroy the effigies of usurpers, O'Neill. Some jaffa burn the symbols on their foreheads.
She swallowed with compassion at having to look in the mirror and see the trauma on their faces, knowing this all too well even if it was different. She wondered if her friend felt the same way about his own reflection and her heart clenched in her chest at the thought.
Daniel jerked both arms toward Teal'c: Thank you Teal'c! Thank you! (he again thrust his arms toward him and looked at Jack) Exactly! (he continued more calmly) Personally I would see them in a museum with an explanation of the context so as not to repeat the same mistakes but... (more sharply) That's not the point!
Jack thought about it and finally agreed with their argument.
Sam added: And we don't celebrate Thanksgiving ourselves anymore since (she pointed to Teal'c) we had to explain to Teal'c where that tradition came from.
Teal'c nodded: Indeed.
Jack swallowed and tilted his head, uncomfortable at the memory, and added nervously: That doesn't stop you from continuing to eat turkey... (There was a long silence in which Teal'c stared at him, not happy that he was making a joke at a time like this. Jack muttered) Sorry. Stay there. (He stood up and gestured to a soldier on guard) Bring her and Dr. Williams in.
Sam winced and straightened up: Sir? (he questioned her with his eyes) Hu. With all due respect Sir. Madam... Eurh. (she grimaced) Anang- (she tilted her head nervously) -Marie is a bit upset after her interrogation. Maybe the timing is not right?
He restrained himself from allowing any non-verbal communication in the face of her pique.
Jack nodded toward the soldier: ASAP.
The soldier left, Jack did the same and returned to his office. Sam glanced at Daniel, who smiled to let her know he was there for her, but the soldier immediately looked away, overwhelmed by a wave of emotions she couldn't accept at the moment. He swallowed, looked at his pen in his hands. This little thing that in several decades would be considered an artifact... If it wasn't already becoming one with the new technologies. He couldn't help but think of Sha're again. Sam had been there for him that day, even if it had been a false memory, and he couldn't bring himself not to do the same for her. He frowned as he corrected himself: To at least try to save her. Why was he telling himself that, he wondered? Why did he feel like he was forgetting something about Oma and another person again?
Teal'c felt the tension between them: Something wrong?
Sam looked up at him, uncomfortable with lying to him: Everything is fine, Teal'c.
Teal'c caught her lie. He glanced at Daniel, who had an expression of extreme concern on his face.
Teal'c to Sam: Don't you want to go change, Colonel Carter?
Sam froze: Uh. (she smiled to reassure him) I'll be fine. It shouldn't take long.
Daniel, gently: At least take off your jacket, you-
Sam firmly: Daniel.
She almost glared at him, and he winced and lowered his head, hurt. Teal'c remained dubious of their icy exchange. A few minutes passed and finally Dr. Williams arrived. Jack saw her through the window and took his place around the table.

Jack: Any more secrets like that? (Bell looked down and exclaimed) Excuse me?!
All faces turned to see Dr. Brightman entered the room, a medical bag over her shoulder and a medical file under her arm.
Dr. Brightman: She is stable. (she handed the file to Bell and she hesitantly grabbed it) You should be there when she wakes up.
Bell looked at the file and then returned it with a nod: Call me.
Jack to Bell: Hey, easy easy. We're not done with you yet.
Dr. Brightman handed him the file: Chief Medical Officer's order.
He looked at the file, his face broke down and he wondered if he was going to hand in his letter of resignation before suppertime.
Jack stammered: W-Why... (he pulled himself together and closed the file) Why wasn't I told about this?
Dr. Brightman picked up the file: Mandatory time limit of 3 months, sir.
Sam closed her eyes as he realized what she was talking about and lowered her head. Daniel and Teal'c looked at each other confused.
Jack was caught off guard: Well... I find that unacceptable.
Dr. Brightman: This is the procedure. (sarcastically) It's not a surprise to anyone. (Sam swallows at the memory of discussions among her female colleagues) Now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to attend to my other patients. Colonel Carter. (Sam looked up, surprised that she was addressing her) Come here. (The doctor opened her medical bag) Blood exposure. (Sam swallowed, the doctor prepared a syringe and an empty vial) This is the procedure, I'm just taking a sample.
The soldier walked over to the doctor, pulled back a sleeve of her bloodstained jacket to free her elbow. Jack shook his head and looked away. This day was a nightmare. He sat back in his chair, rubbed his face, then straightened up and put his elbows on the table.
Jack, quietly, to Bell: Where were we? (he insisted) Any more secrets?
Dr. Brightman grabbed Sam's arm and frowned. The rest of her lacerations, invisible from a distance, had not yet disappeared from so close. She looked at Sam, who shook her head slightly so she wouldn't comment. She had already managed to avoid this question with Daniel and Teal'c a few minutes ago by keeping her jacket on, and now hoped that would continue. The doctor disinfected her elbow but noted to talk to her privately about it later.
Bell looked up at him and hesitated: My mother is in prison as an active member of the BPP.
Jack closed his eyes for two seconds and shook his head. This wasn't a nightmare, this was hell, he thought. Sam looked up at Bell curiously. Brightman pricked her and Sam gasped slightly in surprise as she rested her gaze on her arm, watching the doctor push the vial in and her blood drain out. The doctor questioned her with her eyes, concerned about her unusual reaction. Sam shook her head, smiled to reassure her and turned her attention back to the meeting. The doctor looked at her face and detected signs of fatigue.
Daniel raised his eyebrows: Black Panther Party?
Bell nodded: I'm in it too.
Jack sighed deeply and made a note in the corner of his head to get the staff under Kerry fired. "Work with the CIA they said, it'll make your job easier. My ass, ya," he thought.
Sam, seeing that Teal'c was having trouble keeping up: The Black Panthers is an organization of African Americans who have been fighting for their rights since...Huu.
She frowned, not knowing exactly.
Daniel finished for her: The 1960s.
Bell: 1966.
Daniel continued: They are fighting for the same rights as everyone else.
Bell corrected: Only white people.
Daniel grimaced and nodded several times: Only white people.
Teal'c inclined his head towards Bell: It seems to me a very honorable fight.
Bell replied with a smile, thinking no less of himself.
Dr. Brightman put a cotton ball with a plaster on Sam's elbow: Thank you, Colonel. (she insisted, lower) Rest.
She nodded, quickly put her jacket back on and Dr. Brightman left.
Jack, calmly: They do a lotta things that are totally forbidden by law.
Bell, sarcastically: And who benefits from these laws?
He rolled his eyes and sighed again, feeling the discussion return to politics.
Teal'c: Your mother is in prison?
Bell nodded: For several more years. Her only crime was joining this group. (lower) My father died when he was arrested. (lower still) With other members.
Jack began to lose his patience: Oh for crying out loud. (he took a sarcastic tone) We know very well the actions of your group. (he insisted) You are far from being saints!
Daniel tried to calm down his friend again: Jack.
Jack: Daniel?
Bell gritted her teeth: So we should let this system exterminate us?
Jack regained his composure but still sarcastic: There are other options than violence, you know?
Bell: What, by magic?
Daniel laughed, but in front of Jack's killer look, he cleared his throat. This situation was more than ironic, the famous Jack O'Neill, always ready to rush into action, was giving lessons in non-violence to a member of a collective fighting against oppressors. Bell took a long look at Daniel and realized that it was time to intervene instead of laughing.
Daniel, to Jack: Jack.
Jack became impatient: Daniel.
Daniel tilted his head and insisted: She's right.
Jack, after a few seconds of silence, raising his eyebrows: And that's your argument, Daniel?
Daniel became impatient and put a hand in Bell's direction: You don't want me to repeat word for word what Dr. Williams just said either? (Bell lowered her head, smiled slightly and snapped her fingers twice. Daniel moved his hand briskly towards him) Besides, I know that deep down you agree with them. You love the Nox!
Jack insisted: That's just it! They are peaceful.
Daniel: Well... (he glanced at Bell) We can't all of us have magical powers of invisibility to escape our oppressors. (Jack tilted his head, jaded. Daniel moved his hand towards him again and spoke more quickly) You're just upset because you feel like this whole situation is getting out of hand.
Bell smiled gently at him, grateful.
Teal'c slowly turned his head to Jack and stared intently: Indeed, apprentice.
Jack froze, glared at him, became uncomfortable, and thanked God that his wrestling practice with him was not tonight.
Jack, after turning his tongue several times in his mouth: Well, unless you have anything else bordering on inequality to tell us, Mrs. Williams, we can- (He saw her swallow, closed his eyes again and muttered) For cripes sake...
Bell grinned: Alexander and I help refugees get their residence permits.
Daniel hid his smile behind his hand, elbow on the table. Sam and Teal'c gave him an amused look. At least she was playing fair, they thought.
Jack, stunned: Don't you think that these kinds of details would have been nice to mention in your first meeting?
Bell refrains from rolling her eyes: Oh please. You yourself told me that you wanted to change things.
Jack sarcastically: Not exactly what I was thinking.
Daniel became impatient and exclaimed: What is the symbol of the United States?
Teal'c, since no one was answering the obvious: The Statue of Liberty.
Daniel nodded: Which represents freedom and emancipation from oppression in a more general sense.
Bell muttered: Freedom to die, yeah.
They turned his head towards her and Daniel quickly resumed before Jack got angry again.
Daniel: This is the first thing the refugees see. (he insisted) "I'll light your way, welcome."
Jack rolled his eyes in despair: Do I have to ask you again, Doc? (she quickly answered with a "no" with her head. He stood up and called for a soldier) Please bring Dr. Dang here. (to Bell) Stay. (to SG-1) Dismissed.
Teal'c stood up: I'd like to offer my assistance on the Epsilon base, O'Neill.
Jack nodded: Check with Walter... (he whispered) Master Teal'c. Two more teams are about to leave in (he looked at his watch) 10 minutes. (Teal'c bowed his head and Jack looked at Sam) You may assist him in the departure, but in case you try to negotiate my next order, the authority above me will take care of it. (he insisted that she understand the implication) Go rest.
Sam nodded and stood up: Yes, sir.
She too headed for the stairs, following her friend.
Daniel then stood up but stayed in his place: Jack.
Jack rolled his eyes: Daniel?
Daniel, cautious: Need my help?
Jack glanced at her immediately at this question. She froze on the stairs, raised her eyebrows in incomprehension and resumed her descent of the steps.
Jack winced and looked at Daniel: Please.
Daniel nodded and sat back down, slightly reassured.
