Unknown planet, Solar System, night.
It was Teal'c's watch. The former Apophis Prima was in position about ten meters from the patch of grass where the rest of the team had settled. Jonas, Sam and Jack were sleeping on their respective mattresses.
For a few years now, Sam had taken the habit of not putting herself in the same direction as her superior to avoid any temptation, whether it was on her side or on the other. She had thus waited that the man poses his light mattress and his backpack on the ground to install his, slightly in slant, his bag so that it is close to his so that this sudden desire not to make all correctly is not too flagrant. Like putting his feet close to the head of his superior, for example.
Jack had understood his trick, and had accepted it. That's why he now put his pack down first, and never made any comment. Their colleagues had believed in a new military procedure that no one had told them about, and they too were putting theirs on the side, forming a sort of three-pointed star while one of them stood guard. Therefore, each had their heads close to the other if they wanted to communicate in case of a discreet attack.
Subtle.
The small group slept under Teal'c's watchful eye. But a small, unusual breathing noise woke Jack. He opened his eyes and lowered his head slowly toward the noise, ready to use his P90 on his chest. He saw a quadrupedal creature, somewhere between a horse and a giraffe, the size of a deer and a peculiar color, almost...

“peridot color?”
Jack squinted his eyes to better examine this strange creature a few feet from his feet, and especially to gauge the level of danger. The animal looked like a herbivore, Jack concluded as he saw it attacking an apparently attractive clump of grass. The animal had certainly perceived Jack moving his head towards him and even clutching his weapon, but the planet must have been devoid of predators, as confirmed by the animal which did not seem in any way frightened by the Terran.
He raised his eyebrows as he spotted a second creature, similar to the first except for its smaller size, with white spots on its hindquarters.

"Probably an infant."
The baby shyly approached the other animal and began to graze on the tuft of grass as well. Jack smiled at the sight and wanting to share it with his closest teammate, lightly patted the unknown neighboring shoulder. Immediately a hand came to catch him by reflex, firmly. Jack emerged from his contemplation of the creatures, surprised by this reaction and lowered his gaze to the hand, then to the face. He discovered Sam blinking several times with difficulty, trying to wake up quickly, alerted by his superior. Jack swallowed, not having realized that it was her and had not prepared psychologically. Finally a little more awake - as much as she could without coffee - she questioned him with her eyes, ready for battle, the other hand already on her P90.
Jack smiled slightly to reassure her and nodded toward the two creatures. He emphasized his command with his hand to move it gently, and as he did so, suddenly realized that she was still holding her wrist in her hand, her thumb in her palm.
Sam almost had to crane her neck as she leaned her head back slightly to finally see the creatures. She opened her mouth when she saw them, quickly realizing that they were harmless when she saw the smallest one rubbing her muzzle against her mother's belly and her mother licking her coat to wash it.
Sam began to smile widely.
That famous smile.
The one she had when she made new scientific discoveries.
That smile Jack hadn't seen much of for several years, let alone since Daniel had made the Ascension. Jack's face gradually decomposed, remembering the departure of his friend and how he had reacted with her. How for 2 years, she had stopped smiling at him like that, making him understand that he was not going to get anything from her.
He swallowed, not knowing how to remove his wrist from her grip. He could already see her head starting to make its way back, she would become aware of her gesture and quickly withdraw it.
If he took the first step of withdrawal, the scientist would apologize as she did too often, carrying a guilt that he was the cause. Panicking inwardly and seeing that he had only fractions of a second left, Jack did the only thing he could do: He rested his gaze on the creatures and smiled, as if nothing had happened.
Sam, still smiling, saw him smiling, then suddenly became aware of his hand clutching her wrist. She widened her eyes as she stared at her thumb in her palm, feeling her heart quicken as the seconds ticked by.

“DAMN DAMN DAMN”
She suddenly prayed to a God - it didn't matter if they were a Goa'uld or not that her superior hadn't noticed yet and thought fast, trying to think of a solution.
If she took it off now, the man would become aware of her hold all along and she would have to own up to her bullshit.
If she kept it, it would be worse.
So she decided on the third plan, not having time to come up with a better one in so little time. So she quickly looked back at the creatures, smiling.
Jack, seeing from the corner of his eye the head of his subordinate rising towards the animals, froze.

"She dared?
She really dared?
You little pest!
She's definitely learning from her mentor, you little... Pest!"

The two creatures looked up at the same time, seeming to hear something, and walked away, though they were not frightened any more than that.
The two soldiers stopped smiling, realizing that it was too late to chicken out now. They continued to stare into the darkness for a few more seconds in silence, standing still, trying to come up with a plan again in vain.
Jack, whispering: For crying out loud. (He briskly withdrew his wrist and stood up. Sam half opened her mouth to get out her lie-excuse, but Jack stood up and spoke just enough for only her to hear) None of this has to leave this planet.
She swallowed, understanding that he had noticed her gesture from the beginning, that he had used the same subterfuge, and that he was avenging her decision of two years ago. The only positive side to his sentence was that he assumed his tactics too, not letting her take the blame alone.
He walked over to Teal'c to take his shift, no matter that it wasn't his time, needing to calm his frustration. She knew that the man would not hold it against her and accepted her refusal. He had been doing it for two years. She closed her eyes again, resenting the fact that she had asked him not to talk about this again, and concentrated, repeating the same words inwardly as she always did, to wash her brain again:

NOTES:
- Ok ok, I know we're touching a nerve here :D
For recall, Jack is not an angel and has a point of view often opposed to Daniel, cf all the episodes.
And that's OK.
No one is perfect and each of our heroes carries heavy trauma.
In this fanfic, I point to Sam's trauma over her former relationship with Jonas Hanson who was always in control. Many times, Jack does exactly the same thing. In the scene where she and Daniel are talking about Jonas, the archaeologist keeps looking at Jack, tells Sam about the blackOps problem, and the camera plays EXPRESS to compare Jonas to Jack.
Jack doesn't think he's a God, I didn't say that. In fact, in the episode, Jack explicitly asks Sam if Jonah is in the habit of thinking he's a God and she says he's not. This is ABSOLUTELY not my point. Control in a couple's relationship is defined differently, and that can lead to domestic violence and a toxic relationship.
If you watch the beginning video again carefully, I pointed out moments where Jack is in control. He killed a man with the iris instead of taking him prisoner. Don't forget that.
And Sam likes control too. She tells herself this in the episode "Grace" in season 7 via her "father" and Colson tells her explicitly in season 8
All of this is to highlight the fact that maybe it's not just the Air Force regulations that are a problem.
- I also point out ageism. In TV shows and movies, there is often the same representation with the man older than the woman. Very little the other way around.
I take as a reference the episode SG1 2x14 The Gamekeeper where the game master says to Sam: "Captain Carter, think what it would be like to never grow old. Cuz you never do here, ya know." At the end of the episode, Sam explains that the Gamekeeper couldn't get into her and Teal'c's mind. So the reflection on Sam's fear of aging comes from Jack, not Sam.
This reflection is sexist and I remind that the episodes of Stargate were written by men.
- When I say "sixteen years different", it's not that she's terrified of his older age, but that he's her mentor, he has an influence on her. In law, this is called "moral compulsion".
- When Jack wakes Sam up on a mission, it's always in a somewhat... brutal way. I picked up on that.
- Jack's favorite color is peridot green.
