Escorted out of the police station without having stayed there very long - the privilege of being himself - he looked for the person who was waiting for him in the parking lot from the little information he had been given. He saw Dr. Dang, a cigarette in his mouth, leaning against a car. He walked towards him and Alexander winced at the catastrophic look of the military man. The man looked terrible, but he walked with a determined step towards him. He put out his cigarette, opened the door and threw it into the ashtray. Jack came up to him and immediately hugged him. He didn't know exactly why, but he felt the need. At first surprised, the doctor ended up patting him on the back, uncomfortable with the contact. In the distance, he saw two policemen pointing at them.
Alexander muttered: Thằng chó đẻ.
Jack stepped aside and looked at him: What?
Alexander looked away: Let's not stay here. Get in. (Jack nodded, but the doctor froze at the red drips in various places on his shirt) Are you hurt?
Jack lowered his head and looked at the garment: Not mine.
He frowned in doubt and lifted his shirt to look behind his back as best he could. A trace of electrical burn was there.
Alexander: I'll look into it.
Jack loosened his shirt and got into the car: Anang?
Alexander: I don't know. Not here, anyway.
Jack: We got separated hours ago.
Alexander pulled out of the parking lot and headed toward the center: I'm sure she's fine (Jack tensed and closed his eyes, shaking) Breathe. You're in shock.

A flash.
The drums rose in intensity along with the soldier's heartbeat.
A flash.
Armed. They are armed. A shiver of terror ran through his body. He will die. They are all going to die.
A flash.
The charge hit them and this time the summons were louder.
A flash.
Several people screamed and started to run away.
A flash.
The grenade exploded in the air only a few feet away and he fell on his buttocks with the power of the blast. It took him a few seconds to come to his senses. Tinnitus pierced his ears. Still on the ground and with his eyes closed, the unpleasant noise gradually subsided and was replaced by another sound. A sound he knew all too well. A sound that had no business being here.
A flash.
A sharp pain in the middle of his back pulverized him.
A flash.
Just before he passed out from lack of oxygen, he saw the weapon that had been used on his back.
A flash.
the same bright orange sparkling tip.
A flash.
Alexander handed him a coffee with cream: Drink. You need to hydrate. (Jack's breathing became ragged. He opened his eyes again and forced himself to look outside to calm down. The doctor insisted on his movement with the drink in his hand) Drink. (Jack grabbed the drink) We can't stop right now. We have to wait until we get out of downtown.
A few minutes passed and Jack calmed down. The drink was comforting. He suspected the doctor had filled it with sugar, and the attention touched him, even though he was usually more of a bitter coffee man.
Alexander noticed his damaged pants: I'll have to check your knees.
Jack nodded and realized that the doctor was talking about his history: How... how could I not have known about this?
Alexander: They control the media. And other stuff. (Jack opened the window to relieve another bout of nausea. Memories of war flooded his brain and a memory of Anang struck him: "You can't impose a democracy by force." . He also remembered Kinsey using him to gain sympathy from the people with the journalists. The doctor muttered) Welcome to our reality.
After a few minutes, he parked the car on a deserted street to examine the wound on his back. He disinfected it and prepared a syringe and an empty bottle.
Alexander disinfected his elbow: Blood exposure. (Jack nodded and thought of Sam at the briefing) Do you have your passport and credit card with you?
Jack checked: Passport.
Alexander looked around to see if anyone was around: Okay, I'll take you to the airport. (he started to take off his sweater, Jack looked at him, incredulous) You'll take my clothes, you won't be able to fly like that. I've got my blouse.
Being unable to think straight, the soldier complied. The doctor removed his shirt and handed it to him. Jack frowned at the sight of two scars on the doctor's chest. He looked up at him and the doctor stared at him silently with an almost ferocious look on his face, inviting him to be quiet. Jack swallowed, took off his T-shirt and Alexander went to get his gown from the trunk.
Jack ventured: Cancer or...?
Alexander, firmly: Or.
Jack tingled at his tone and realized he was definitely inviting him to stop commenting. The doctor buttoned his coat and got into the driver's seat. Jack got back into the car, embarrassed, not knowing how to react. There was a heavy silence for a moment.
Alexander: Money for the plane?
Jack shook his head: No need. I'm on the FAA's good side. (Alexander rolled his eyes and there was another silence. The military man grinned) Anang brought me in to understand, but... I don't see how.
Alexander frowned: How what?
Jack: How do you change that?
Alexander huffed in annoyance: And apparently you don't see the irony in asking the people who suffer these horrors to explain the solutions to get out of this mess.
Jack swallowed and looked out the window: Eurrh. Sorry. Forget it.
Alexander took a deep breath to calm himself: Inaction and silence are hyper-violent forms of oppression. Passivity in the face of injustice, you understand? (his passenger nodded) You've just been active. (he added sharply) And don't expect a thank you from us, that should be the norm.
Jack swallowed and nodded again. Alexander grinned at having lost his patience, grabbed his cigarette pack, pressed the burner on the car and opened his window.
Alexander put a cigarette in his mouth: Sorry, I really need a smoke.
Jack tilted his head: Hm. (He mumbled to himself) Me too. (Alexander handed him the package but the man shook his head) Thank you. I had a hard time stopping.
Alexander: I can't help it when I'm nervous.
Jack, surprised by this statement: "Nervous"?
The car's burner button went off.
Alexander lit his cigarette: In my job, you're used to high stress situations. I can handle it on the operating table without any worries, but talking about things like this...
He shook his head and smoked.
Jack: Sorry. I'll... I'll ask Daniel you're right. (He took a deep breath) Thanks for picking me up. (He perked up) How did you know I was here?
Alexander grimaced: Bell was there when the base heard you were at the station. (He smiled at him) The word gets around at your place pretty quickly. (Jack swallowed his saliva and Alexander resumed his seriousness) She told Sergeant Harriman that I had an operation today in Saint Paul. I got her message when I got out of surgery and came over.
Jack: Thank you.
Alexander nodded, focused on the road and finished his cigarette in silence. Jack watched the world go by outside the window.
Alexander: Getting back to how to do it. (Jack turned his head sharply toward him, surprised that he was taking over this conversation) You white people are afraid to speak up because of the opinion of other white people, you-

He was silent in front of her murderous look.
Alexander lost all patience: Where were you then? (Jack didn't know where to put himself. Alexander took a deep breath to regain his composure and restrained himself from having another cigarette) Lesson 1, learn to be quiet and listen. Lesson 2, act and spread our word. Lesson 3, accepting the idea of dying for the cause will make you the best ally. (Jack widened his eyes at this last point, which definitely reminded him of the Army. Alexander continued more quietly) It's been going on for years.
Jack spoke to himself: Yeah. It would take a good war to get their minds right.
Alexander tilted his head and rephrased: More like a civil revolution.
Jack froze, rather surprised to hear him agree: What?
Alexander: What "what"? (he frowned and gritted his teeth) You expect me to stay "zen" and speak words of wisdom? (Jack winced and Alexander moved his hand on the wheel) Shit, look at other worlds. (the military man questioned him with his eyes) Where are the people of color? (he insisted) Even the worlds of non-white cultures are run by white people.
Jack frowned: Wait wait wait. What?
Alexander: The Orbanians? This people originated from a pre-Aztec civilization in South America. (He glanced at her) Why are they white? (Jack opened his mouth and Alexander moved his hand again) Or here, Madrona comes from the Polynesian culture. Guess what?
Jack swallowed: There are some worlds. (he moved his hand limply) Simarka for example. Or the Salish.
Alexander nodded and glanced at him: And?
Jack: And... (He searched his memory and winced) Yeah.
Alexander, lower: It's already a mess here, but now we know we're being exterminated all over the galaxy.
Silence.
Jack hesitated: If we had the opportunity to start over, do you think it would change things?
Alexander frowned: What do you mean?
Jack quietly: I don't know, I'm thinking as I speak.
Alexander thought for a moment and then shook his head: We'd have to go over everything.
Jack: But it would be possible?
Alexander smiled at him: You know, we like to imagine a better world, but that doesn't mean we've had the opportunity. (Jack frowned and continued to think. Alexander glanced at him furtively several times and hesitated) You... Are you thinking what I think you're thinking?
Jack looked at him for a moment: I think so.
Alexander refocused on the road and thought about this proposal for a moment.
Alexander hesitated, given the emotional state of the man beside him: One more thing, sir. Colonel Carter called the base. It seems that his goddaughter did not show up for her interview with the IOA.
Jack, concerned: Cassandra?
Alexander searched his memory: I think that's it. Colonel Carter took the first plane and...
Jack: And?
Alexander winced: And the girl is nowhere to be found.
Jack froze: What?
Alexander: Dr. Jackson and Teal'c join her in Reno. Reynolds knows.
Jack fussed: I must join them.
Alexander frowned: General, I know you're still in shock, but you belong in charge of the SGC, not in the field. (he insisted). You will already have enough problems to justify your presence at the police stat-
Jack got angry: I don't care where they ask me to be. (He insisted) I'm going to join them.
Alexander nodded and stopped the car at the airport drop-off point: Then I wish you all good luck.

He had access to the information on the small TV set embedded in the seat opposite his in the plane. Alexander's words were confirmed by the journalists: what the soldier had experienced during the protest was not at all what the journalists were reporting to the public. They were mainly focusing on the damaged buildings, not on the police violence or the demands of the riots. Jack finally turned off the TV when the mayor, no need to mention his skin color, congratulated the local police chief for keeping order. He thought about their discussion in the car and other things. Everything was blurring in his head, his whole body was crying out for rest.
What about this relationship?
Sam: Jonas is right. It’s exactly what we did.
Jack: He wasn’t human. Get that through your heads.
Sam: You could have fooled me.
Jack: He wasn’t human. Get that through your heads.
Sam: You could have fooled me.
Why was it so hard?
Jonas: You do realize what you did?
Why was he thinking about that now?
Jonas: You used his humanity against him.
Jack: His what?
Jack: His what?
Things were easier when they weren't together.
Jack: He wasn’t human. Get that through your heads.
Sam: Jonas is right.
Sam: Jonas is right.
Hmm. No. Not really easier.
Jack: We did the right thing.
Jonas: I hope you’re right, sir.

More frustrating, perhaps.

Nothing was right.
Nothing was right.
Sam: Jonas is right. It’s exactly what we did.
Nothing.

He quickly found Daniel and Teal'c in the transfer area. Daniel frowned at his extra-long T-shirt, strangely unusual for his style of dress. Jack realized this, grunted, folded the edge of the garment and stuffed it into his pants. Daniel sensed his friend's annoyance and restrained himself from asking him about it.
Daniel continued walking: We heard from Sam just before we boarded.
Jack: So?
Daniel: So the Reno police gave him the usual speech.
Jack: The missing person is over eighteen years old, so they're not reported missing until the forty-eight hours are up?
Daniel: Yeah, that one. They weren't going to do anything but fill out triplicate forms, so she contacted Officer Barrett, who contacted the Reno Police Department to put pressure on.
Jack, surprised: Barrett?
Daniel: Barrett will do anything to find Cassandra, Jack. (The soldier looked at him skeptically and Daniel tilted his head) He has a crush on Sam.
Jack raised his eyebrows: What did the police find out?
Daniel hesitated for a few seconds and added seriously: Nothing.
He saw her a few meters away on the phone and waved his hand to signal their presence. She hung up, turned around and headed for the parking lot without saying a word to them, the group looked at each other, surprised. She seemed exhausted, but also... angry? They followed her quickly.
Sam to Jack: Did you tell them?
Jack smiles wryly: Good evening to you too, Carter.
She continued walking towards the car without answering.
Daniel to Jack: Tell what?
Jack: In a few days, I'm gonna be promoted to Major-General.
Teal'c after a few seconds of silence: Congratulations O'Neill.
Jack smiles weakly: Thank you Teal'c.
Daniel frowned and puzzled: Congratulations, yes, I guess... And what does that mean in practical terms?
Jack: I was transferred to the Pentagon as head of Homeworld Security.
Daniel: What?
Jack: Hammond is retiring. Finally. Someone's going to take over the SGC.
Daniel: What?
Jack: Daniel. This is a good thing.
Daniel, puzzled : How could that be a good thing?
Jack slightly defensively: Teal'c resigned two days ago, I remind you.
Daniel looked at Teal'c: Yes, but it may be temporary, right?
Teal'c: It won't be temporary, Daniel Jackson.
Daniel grimaced, she swallowed and lowered her head.
Daniel to Jack: And the real reason?
Sam, also sarcastic: If you can get one, Daniel, I'll buy you a drink!
Jack coldly: Carter. (she stood still and challenged him with her eyes. Daniel and Teal'c looked on in disbelief. Jack glared at them and then back at her) I don't have to explain myself, is that clear? (she glanced at Teal'c and Daniel to show them her behavior. He rolled his eyes) Oh for crying out loud. (She turned around to go back to the car and he lost patience) Looking for a report of insubordination, Colonel?
Sam continued to walk: Because it's an official mission now? (She casually waved her hand and muttered) Then go ahead. Stick me with your damn report, we are no longer close to a new work suspension, right?
Jack sharply: Carter! I am your superior and you must obey me even if I don't explain why. That's called "an order".
Sam almost shouted: Forget it!
Jack, stunned: What?!
Sam between her teeth: Forget it (she insisted) Sir. I'll do it myself.
Jack grabbed her by the shoulder to immobilize her and screamed: What the piss?! I am here to help you find her.
Sam gritted her teeth: I don't need you.
Jack: You're not the only one who cares about her! Now if we don't work as a team we'll never find her. Watch your language and change your tone with me. Did I make myself clear? (she ranted silently and stared at him. He insisted) Colonel?
Sam finally accepted his argument and swallowed: Yes, sir. (He released her. Daniel and Teal'c, who had been watching the scene, looked at each other again, completely stunned. She continued) I got a hold of one of Cassie's friends. She told me to go talk to her boyfriend.
Daniel: Let me guess. He's missing too?
Sam nodded: As well as his car.
Jack raised his eyebrows: That doesn't sound like Cass’. (she turned her head toward him, surprised that he would know how she would behave around boys. He moved his hand) She loves her studies and would have to pay the guy a lotta money to get his head out of his books for more than an hour.
She looked away and gritted her teeth. How did he know about her boyfriend when she had just learned of his existence?
Sam swallowed her pride: The good news is that Barrett gave me the GPS coordinates of his vehicle. (she moved her hand) This kid thinks she's smart by dropping their phones and forgetting to check if the vehicle is not connected. (she mumbled) I'm going to put a transmitter on her when I see her again. (Daniel raised his eyebrows and glanced at the two men, finding her idea a bit radical. They arrived at the rental car, she showed the keys and spoke more softly) Who slept more?
Jack tried to grab them, but she snapped her hand back, then looked at Daniel and Teal'c without explanation. The latter looked at them again strangely. Okay, he had dark circles under his eyes and looked terrible, but still? Daniel held out his hand, not without hesitation. She gave him the keychain and sat down on the passenger seat.
Daniel enters: Where are we going? (she points to the GPS as the only answer) Okay... (The archaeologist turns on the device and it shows the real-time geolocation of the boyfriend's car, more than 11 hours away. Daniel raised his eyebrows) Hu. That's a long way.
Sam: Yeah, they didn't wait for us. (she pulled out her phone) I'll tell Barrett to call for a police roadblock.
Jack, a little more briskly than he would have liked: No! (they froze and he pulled himself together) We'll handle it.
Daniel exchanged a look with Sam and then addressed Jack: Eurh... This would really go a lot faster if-
Jack insisted: We'll handle it. I'd rather we get to Cassie than risk some yahoo civvy officer shooting her and ruining any chance of finding her. Let's keep a low profile.
Daniel raised his eyebrows, questioned Sam, who finally accepted the argument.
Daniel started the car: Spring break late.
Echo:

The tension was as unbearable as the heat outside the car. Crossing the barren desert, Sam had taken the wheel again. Jack had given up trying to make jokes after the second time when he saw her glowering at him or answering only "yes" or "no" if it concerned their mission to find Cassie. To make a long story short, no one dared to talk anymore. After a while, Daniel couldn't take it anymore.
Daniel: Are you going to tell us what's really going on between you?
She grabbed the wheel.
Jack played dumb: What do you mean?
Teal'c: I've noticed some changes between you.
Jack rubbed his face, low: Here we go. (she mumbled and he glanced sideways at her, puzzled that she would repeat her insubordination) You say something, Carter?
Sam gritted her teeth: No, sir. (she flipped on the blinker) Who's replacing me?
Teal'c: My turn.
Jack glanced at the GPS: Their car has been stopped for a while in Laramie.
Daniel: Maybe they're resting.
Teal'c: Maybe their destination is Colorado Springs.
Sam: Yeah, that's what I thought too. (she added further down, this time slightly guiltily) Look guys. I'm sorry you had to bother with this. (Daniel restrained himself from making a reassuring comment that could be misconstrued and she parked the car) We can catch them if we keep taking turns.
Jack grinned: Normally I would say yes, but we're all exhausted. (she unbuckled her belt and Teal'c did the same) Let's find a motel and get some sleep. (he moved his hand weakly) And I need to get some clean clothes.
She considered the plan and looked at the other two. Daniel pleaded with her to agree and Teal'c nodded.
Sam got out of the car and resolved: Okay. (to herself) I also need to shower and change.

The motel was pitiful. More than pitiful, it was horrible. Daniel and Teal'c had gone out to get lunch. She came out of the bathroom and found her superior in the same position as before her shower: lying on the bed in front of a stupid TV show, one arm behind his head for support. She sat down around the table, took out her cell phone and grumbled inwardly about the poor reception of the phone network.
Sam: I got a message from Anang several hours ago.
Jack, concentrating on the program: Hmm.
Sam, puzzled: A protest?
Jack dodged a smile: The real question is how come the Joint Chiefs of Staff haven't given me a lecture on it yet after JAG intervened to get me out of jail.
Sam moved her phone, a touch of sarcasm in her voice: Because the connection is bad?
He decided not to play her game, returned his gaze to the post and tried to keep his composure by taking a deep breath. Thank God she hadn't made the connection yet that maybe his "friend" working at the CIA had probably already taken care of this detail.
Sam bit the inside of her mouth at her own behavior and added a notch lower: I guess if we find Cassie, I can finally take that job offer at Area 51 to be closer to her. (He turned his head toward her and stared, surprised. She murmured) I've been thinking about it for a few months.
He finally understood her words in that room in Memphis when she told him to accept her transfer. He had taken it as a childish threat, but it was something thoughtful. She had joined the Air Force to pursue her dream of becoming an astronaut, and then that dream had been manipulated so that she would not be a problem after her rapes and had joined the SGC. Even though she loved her job, she surely needed to reclaim her life, her own choices, and above all, she was coming out of 8 years of war against formidable enemies. We were far from the stars.
Jack: I guess so. (They looked at each other blankly for a few seconds, then he turned his head toward the station) Lieutenant Hailey is transferred there too.
Sam waited some more, without success: And that's it? (he shrugged a shoulder without looking at her) You can't just pretend this didn't happen.
Jack: I'm not pretending anything.
They froze at the same time at this echo but he refused to turn his head towards her.
Sam almost begged him in a whisper: Don't... Don't do that to me again.
Jack sighed and turned off the remote: What do you want me to say, Carter?
Sam swallowed: Something. (he sat down on the edge of the bed, stretched his aching back because of the uncomfortable mattress, looked at her and let her know that he didn't know what to say. She added after a few seconds of silence) No explanation?
Jack bowed his head and grimaced: I have made a decision and I would like you to respect it.
Sam lowered her head: I respect it but I don't understand it (he remained silent, she whispered) Can you at least look at me?
He raised his head towards her and they looked at each other for a moment.

Damn, man, he thought, you're acting like you did when Daniel disappeared. You can't do that to her again when Cassie's gone. Wake up.
He was about to answer but as usual, Daniel entered the room followed closely by Teal'c carrying three pizza boxes.
Daniel noticed that they were potentially in the middle of a discussion: Oops. Sorry. Are we interrupting?
Echo:
*You can't just pretend this didn't happen. - I'm not pretending anything.*

She waited for him to make his decision, but he got lost in his thoughts. He wanted to run away to protect her, but his legs refused to move. If anyone should be transferred, it was him, not her. He didn't understand her request. It was illogical and she was the opposite of illogical. Could she give up her career at the SGC so easily? And his change of expression... Jack stood up and grabbed the pizzas and put them on the table: It's all good. Hey, listen. I need to talk to you.
She gave him an evil look to make him understand that it was a little late for that. At the firm look of her superior, she pulled herself together as best she could. The others sat down around the table, uncomfortable.
Daniel winced: What's going on? I'm starting to lose it.
Jack: Don't worry.
He opened the first of the pizza boxes, Daniel handed out beers to each of them and Teal'c placed several cans of Crush soda in front of him: Orange, Peach or Watermelon.
Sam picked up one of the cans, puzzled: Watermelon Crush?
Teal'c, with a hint of pride in his voice: Nevada's favorite drink.
She questioned him with amusement and put the can back on the table.
Daniel, amused: Teal'c was very insistent on tasting all the flavors.
Teal'c opened one of the cans: I'm intrigued by so many choices of beverage.
She smiled at him and the jaffa raised his can to invite them to drink. It was as Jack clinked his beer with them that the rest of the group realized that he had forgotten for a few seconds that he wanted to talk to them.
Jack, a little nervous: I'd like to keep this whole discussion between us.
Daniel stopped drinking his beer: Wow.
Jack played with the droplets of condensation from his bottle, not knowing how to bring up the subject.
Teal'c: We are concerned by your silence, O'Neill.
Daniel ventured: Does this have anything to do with your mutation?
Jack insisted: “Between us”?
They stared at him and all nodded their heads at the oath. Jack turned his head toward her and held her gaze. She frowned and questioned his insistence with her eyes. Then her face broke down at his implication that she had not held her tongue about their former relationship with Anang. She swallowed and nodded again with a guilty look. Daniel and Teal'c exchanged glances again, skeptical.
Jack took a sip as if nothing had happened: What do you think of the new team? The psych team.
Sam moistened her lips with nervousness and remained silent.
Daniel took a slice: That you did very well to hire them. (he ventured and insisted) All of them.
Teal'c: Their convictions bring them together.
Jack nodded slowly several times and looked down at his beer.
Daniel frowned: Jack, what exactly is your idea? (he glanced at Sam) Put them on an SG team? (he and she both winced at the thought) Because I'm not sure that-
Jack straightened up and took a deep breath: No, no. There's this kinda idea that... (They waited for the next part but the man winced with nervousness) I... I don't know how to say this.
Daniel understood his confusion and added gently: Say it in your own words Jack. You are far from being as stupid as you often want us to believe.
Jack raised his eyebrows in surprise. Teal'c nodded in agreement with his friend. Even Sam swallowed, nodded and looked away. He felt his heart melt and confirmed that they would miss each other. Not wanting to admit his confusion, he took the last slice, switched the three boxes and opened the second box.
Jack: Well, I'm warning you, this may sound a little crazy. What if... Suppose we could... I don't know... Create a more... More... Better... Elsewhere.
The group looked at him doubtfully, and Jack pointed a finger at the ceiling to emphasize his thoughts.
Daniel raised his eyebrows: Create a utopia on a side site and put them in charge?
Jack nodded: Sort of.
Sam: Wow.
Daniel: That's um...
Sam: Audacious.
Daniel at the same time: Ambitious.
They looked at each other strangely for a few seconds and then looked away, uncomfortable. Jack wondered how he should take her "Audacious".
Daniel leaned back in his seat and put a hand on the back of his neck: "Crazy" was an understatement, Jack.
Teal'c: Indeed.
Jack: Something... Do something that... um... (he shook his head, slightly lost in thought) Really make a difference? (he tilted his head nervously) I just feel like everything we've done over the years hasn't helped... Hmm.
Daniel concluded for him: Make things better here.
Jack pointed to his beer to validate his words.
Teal'c: Have you ever talked to them, O'Neill?
Jack, slightly resigned: I don't even know if it's possible. And shortly before I was transferred.
Daniel raised his eyebrows at a detail: And you want to keep it a secret?
Sam was also puzzled: How?
Jack moved his hands limply: I have no idea. You're the brain.
She shook her head at his impossible request. Daniel poured himself another slice and Jack frowned: She hadn't eaten anything.
Sam: The SGC is under 24-hour surveillance. It takes a multitude of clearances to just get (she insisted) clearance to know about the project, so wanting to create a new colony in secret... Elsewhere?
Jack tilted his head and gave them an obvious look: "crazy".
Daniel: I guess it wouldn't be just the three of them leaving.
Jack nodded: With supplies, equipment...
Sam: We'll need a ship.
Daniel: But... We don't have ship.
He frowned, wondering where he had heard this conversation before.
Teal'c grabbed another slice: Colonel Carter, weren't you the one who designed the surveillance system reinforcements?
Daniel raised a finger towards them: From the SGC but also from the B304.
Sam nodded: Exactly. Everything is sent to the Pentagon and the slightest infraction is reported to several different places simultaneously. (she smiled slightly wryly as she looked at Jack) And the programs have been modified since we've been working with the CIA. (she shook her head at the group) Everything is monitored, so borrowing a ship...
Silence.
Daniel tried to lighten the mood and smiled at Jack: This would be our last mission together?
Jack: Nice little finale, isn't it?
Sam gritted her teeth: Better than this one, that's for sure. (Daniel's smile disappeared, Jack moistened his lips with nervousness and Teal'c clenched his jaw several times. She shook her head and huffed) Sorry.
Daniel ventured back to the original topic: Any idea what your "elsewhere" is?
Jack took another sip: Remember when I disappeared with Maybourne?
Sam: P5X-777.
Teal'c: She has a moon that can be accessed via a Furlings transporter.
Daniel remembered Jonas' notes: "only the righteous may pass".
Jack raised his finger to Teal’c and tilted his head in agreement: This gave them protection while they... found a way to defend themselves.
Sam: Wait wait wait. You are aware that the key is- (her face broke down, she looked at him and he nodded) Oh.
Daniel: What?
Jack smiled wryly at Sam and grabbed a slice: Didn't you tell them?
Sam gritted her teeth, then put on a brave face: I'm seriously considering taking a job in Area 51.
Daniel widened his eyes: What? You're leaving the SGC?
Sam nodded: Cassie is next door and... it will be quieter. I need more stability. (she glanced at Jack and he swallowed. She turned her head to Teal'c, who seemed stunned by the news) I... I'm really glad that my last mission with you was the rescue of Dakara.
Teal'c nodded, touched: Likewise.
Sam smiled fondly at her friend and then turned her head to Jack: You realize how safe this facility is? (she shook her head slightly and insisted) I didn't design this one.
Jack: Oh come on, we've had much crazier plans.
Daniel smiles at her to encourage her: You have a gift for finding solutions in the worst situations.
She put her elbows on the table and spread her hands, it didn't make her laugh at all. She was in need of calm and stability and they were asking her to join a high-risk mission. Daniel seemed to become more and more aware that his teammates were leaving one after the other and his heart broke at the thought.
Sam started to get lost in her thoughts: I replace the key with a replica, anyway I haven't read any new work on it, I think they have better things to do with their serial space fleet projects. I'm deferring the surveillance system without getting caught... And you can't imagine how much work it will be! (she mumbled to herself, stopping herself from looking at Jack) Well, we'll just have to ask our friend for help.
Daniel frowned and Teal'c raised his eyebrows, wondering who she was talking about.
Jack didn't play along and addressed the two men: Lieutenant Hailey is being transferred to Area 51 in a short while.
She stopped herself from smiling wryly at his perfectly appropriate lie and then tilted her head from side to side to consider the pros and cons of including him in this illegal scheme that could end her career, as well as put her in danger. Strangely enough, she had much less trouble considering these possibilities concerning Jack's ex but she quickly pushed this petty idea out of her brain. Her face quickly broke down at another thought: Was he going to go out with Kerry again? Fortunately she was able to pull herself together before the boys noticed her.
Daniel grabbed another slice: And then what?
Teal'c did the same: We immobilize the SGC personnel and open the gate.
Sam rolled her eyes, finding this plan totally stupid as well as being too risky.
Daniel pointed to Teal'c: To another destination so as not to leave a trail. (He moved a hand) And we need to think of another plan if the one Sam has planned doesn't work.
Sam exclaimed: Excuse me?!
Daniel discovered her outraged: Uh... no but just in case.
Jack moved his hand weakly towards her: Your plan A never works, Carter.
Sam rolled her eyes: Go ahead, please. (She waved her hand) Propose your plan.
The boys looked at each other. Okay, so the mission to find Cassandra was stressful, but still...
Sam got angry: Here. (she raised her hand, elbow on the table) I'm even the first to say that this plan is unworkable and too risky. (she looked at him, emphasizing her hand in the air) Shall we take a vote? (she looked at the others, Daniel swallowed and looked down, Teal'c looked at her, puzzled. She lowered her hand and mumbled) It's not my idea.

Jack exhaled softly and tilted his head: Okay. Let's try to stay positive, shall we?
Daniel tried to change the subject: It would be necessary to put in contact a trusted ally on this project. (he moved his hand) To protect them, just in case.
Jack took a slice: Who do you think?
Daniel proposed: The Asgard?
Sam: If the Asgard agree to be part of the game, we can forget about using the gate or any of our ships.
Daniel agreed: They will relocate them directly.
She nodded.
Jack raised his beer slightly to her: Your plan B.
She gave him an evil look. Well, their little game was getting old, Daniel thought.
Teal'c switched boxes, opened the last one and helped himself: Will they accept?
Jack: Let's just say they owe us more than one favor.
Daniel grabbed a slice: Yeah yeah, but we're not talking about an official mission here. (he frowned and thought) Even... possible to... Exactly how much of a violation are we talking about here?
Sam: High treason?
Teal'c: Besides, the Asgard are busy rebuilding their civilization.
Sam nodded: As well as dealing with their genetic problem.
Daniel: And also assuming they'll agree to keep it a secret... They don't like to get too involved in our personal problems.
Jack: Damn fellas, you're positive.
The group continued to think in silence for a moment.
Teal'c: I can look for a ship.
Sam grimaced: It would be too risky. (they questioned her with their eyes and she moistened her lips) Teal'c. Who knows what the Joint Chiefs of Staff or the IOA might do to you.
Jack snickered: Right. (looked at all of them) Even all of you just with this conversation. (he straightened up) No obligation to do this. (he looked at Carter) That's not an order. Goodbye career and hello court martial. (he looked at Teal'c and Daniel) And you...
He tilted his head and winced.
Daniel: I'm in.
Teal'c nodded: I join you, with great honor, on this final mission.
Jack smiled at them and they turned their heads toward her. She took a deep breath and ran a hand through her hair.
Sam: I wish I had thought more about it.
Jack: Carter, no obligation.
Sam looked at him: I know, Sir. (nervously) Just let me work on it for a few days.
Daniel recalled a discussion: Dr. Williams once asked me if we had encountered any ideal civilizations.
Sam turned her head toward him, surprised and slightly cautious: Do you think she had this idea in mind?
Daniel tilted his head: That's still a dream for most activists, I guess. A world free of hate and injustice.
Jack raised his eyebrows at the memory of his discussion with Alexander in the car: I'll tell them as soon as I can. But the idea came from Alexander. (he tilted his head and straightened up) From Anang too. (he winced and looked at his beer) Why not try?
Daniel: We need to find more allies. This project is too big for them.
Jack raised his eyebrows: Or for us.
Teal'c: "To see things in the seed, that is genius".
Daniel smiles at him: You are continuing your study of Earth philosophy?
Teal'c: I am. I was curious as to why the Taoists consider Laozi to be a God.
Jack widened his eyes for a split second and shook his head.
Daniel: Remind me to get you some books on Buddhism. There are a lot of similarities with Ascension.
Teal'c: Dr. Dang has already given me a list of copies.
Daniel nodded: Good.
Sam looked at her bottle, still in her thoughts: Colson.
All turned their heads towards her, surprised by this return to the initial conversation. Jack decided to answer first, as the two companions remained silent.
Jack raised his eyebrows: Excuse me?
Sam: I know what Alec believes in. (she hurried to add) And he agreed to keep his mouth shut and continue to help us by giving up his whole life here.
Jack: Not much choice.
Sam: Hmm. (She shrugged.) The Asgard could move him under the radar, or I could ask for his expertise on a project so as not to arouse suspicion. (Group silence.) Look. I know what you think of him, but I feel it's the right thing to do.
Daniel smiles at her: A hunch?
She shrugged slightly again and said nothing more. In fact, she seemed turned off, which confused the rest of the group.
Teal'c: I have every confidence in you.
She nodded toward him with a faint smile of recognition, then looked at the other two, without much conviction. Jack raised both hands and shook his head, indicating that he agreed with the majority. All eyes turned to Daniel.
Daniel shrugged and shook his head: If Sam trusts him...
Sam then looked at Jack: I'll contact him. (he nodded and she hesitated) I’m thinking of someone else.
Daniel almost begged: Please. Not Bill.
Sam turned her head to him in surprise: What do you have against Doctor Lee?
Daniel raised his eyebrows, cautiously: Were you thinking of Bill?
Sam: No, I was thinking of Jonas.
Jack exclaimed in disbelief: Jonas?!
The table turned its head towards him, surprised that he was reacting this way. He shook his head and pulled himself together, not wanting to mention the fact that he had been thinking about him a few hours ago. She sensed his confusion and insisted on his silent questioning. He panicked and lightly pushed the pizza box toward her. She looked at the box, then at him.
Teal'c: He will be a very good ally.
Jack grinned: He will. The rest of his people...
Daniel: Hmm, that's just it. He knows best. (Jack looked at him and Daniel nodded) Well... Our people... "His people"...
Teal'c: There are many similarities in their policies.
Jack after a few seconds of reflection: Yah.
Silence.
Daniel, seriously: There is one point I would like to clarify please. (he had their full attention) Jack. It took 8 years for you to finally take an interest in the social struggles here?
Jack gave him a jaded look, Daniel lowered his head to hold back a laugh and Teal'c smiled at their usual friendly bickering. The military man then shook his head and gave his friend a smirk, concluding that he would definitely miss him. Daniel guessed his thoughts and his expression gradually changed to nostalgia, then to concern: Who was going to take over the SGC in his place, and more importantly, would he have to fight again every day to get his point of view heard? The Joint Chiefs of Staff did not train the most ethical people, he knew. Jack looked away at this vision, troubled, and looked around the table for a glimmer of hope to put a band-aid on his own sadness. He came across Sam's closed face, far from thrilled with Daniel's observation alongside her own. He swallowed and looked down at his beer. Daniel saw his reaction and turned his head to the cause.

CW: *eating disorder*
Daniel to Sam, gently: Maybe you should eat something.
And damn, there it was, the attention was on her. Jack preferred not to look up for fear of being the woman's next target.
Sam tried to smile as sincerely as possible: I'm not hungry, thanks.
Daniel worried: You have to eat.
Sam looked at him with a big ironic smile to invite him to be quiet and Daniel swallowed.
Jack tried anyway: Daniel is right. We need you to be in shape.
Sam became impatient: Oh, you care?
Teal'c raised his eyebrows, puzzled. Daniel's eyes widened at his reaction, what the hell was going on? This was getting to be way too regular lately.
Jack firmly: Carter.
Sam ranted: Don't...! (She restrained herself from adding anything and grunted) Humrf.
Daniel lowered his head and grinned, softly: No. Come on. Please. Don't do...that.
Sam frowned at him, surprised at his almost heartbreaking tone.
Jack, after several seconds of silence: "That" what?
Daniel remained silent but the whole table could sense his mixture of nervousness and sadness. It was bad enough that she rejected him, but the thought of her going down the same road with Jack was unbearable. Would she then do the same with Teal'c or Cassandra? It was hard enough for the archaeologist to accept that Teal'c and Jack were leaving Colorado Springs.
Teal'c: You are indeed acting strangely.
Sam stood up abruptly: Sorry. (She walked to the door) I'm just tired.
Daniel and Teal'c looked at each other, still unconvinced by this lie.
Jack sarcastically: Oh, are you tired, Carter? Maybe with something in your stoma-
Daniel and Teal'c looked away, unsure how to react to them. Sam turned around, and saw that only Jack was watching.
Sam made a 3 sign with her fingers on her watch: I just need to sleep for a few (she insisted) hours.
He nodded at the code, she turned and opened the door.
Daniel ventured: Have a good rest then.
Sam, mechanically: Thanks, you too.
She walked out, leaving the boys in a heavy silence.
Daniel to Teal'c: What's wrong with her? (he frowned and turned his head to Jack) What have you done?
Jack raised his eyebrows, shocked by this insinuation: Excuse me?!
Daniel winced: Jack?
Jack: Daniel? (he made a casual movement with his hand and insisted) Give me a revelation.
Daniel shook his head a few times: I doubt it's just these transfer stories or Cassandra that puts her in this state.
Teal'c: Colonel Carter seems to have a personal grudge against you.
Jack got up to take a shower: Well, go ask her why yourself.
Daniel and Teal'c looked at each other again, but this time worried for their two friends. The next few days were not going to be easy.
Echo:
*Maybe you should eat something. / You have to eat. / Maybe with something in your stoma-*
*I'm just tired. / Oh, are you tired, Carter? / I just need to sleep / Have a good rest then.*
