She activated the magnetic pass she had retrieved a few minutes earlier from the lockers at the reception desk. The text message had been more than concise: Name of the hotel and locker number. She had to find the password alone. Fortunately, the room number was on the pass. She entered the bedroom and the first thing she saw was his green cap sitting on the dresser. She put down her motorcycle helmet, put her leather jacket next to the one already in the closet, and took off her shoes. She then pulled the baseball cap over her head and took the few remaining steps to discover him slumped on the couch. With his feet up on the coffee table in front of the TV, he was playing with what appeared to be a small matchbox between his fingers. He turned his head towards her and couldn't help but smile when he saw her with her cap on.
Jack stuffed the little box in his pocket and turned off the TV: Are you getting comfortable, Carter?
Sam looked around the room: I see your choices are still reasonable.
Jack: I'm making up for this sweltering heat.
Sam approached the couch, giving him a doubtful look from his rehearsal: Weather, sir?
Jack: Who can choose to live here?
Sam motioned with her hand for him to remove his feet from the table: How was the flying session?
Jack raised his eyebrows at his silent command but complied: Nice.
Sam sat on the other end of the couch: Next time, invite me. I seem to remember I'm a pilot too. (He felt slightly uncomfortable when he realized that it had indeed been a long time since she had flown. Yet her tone was not reproachful and she smiled) I'm surprised you're available tonight. (he questioned her with his eyes, she looked at him with a knowing look) Mitchell invited me to the Casino.
Jack, in a casual tone: Funny. I wanted to invite him.
Sam: You want him to hire you too?
Jack: At the bar, yeah. (he insisted) A certain type of b-
Sam gently alerted him to what he might suggest: Sir.
Jack exaggerated his seriousness: Oh, but I was going to invite you.
Sam smiled wryly: How are Daniel and Teal'c?
Jack: I've only seen Daniel. Not so good.
Sam grinned: Hmm. I heard.
Jack: Don't worry about him. (She tilted her head, unconvinced) So did you change your pin code?
Sam thought back to the locker code he had chosen and shook her head: Choose. Either you rub off on me for being late, or a young woman had to negotiate a very long time for me to give her the keys to my car.
Jack, amused: Ethan doesn't want to take his with her anymore, does he?
Sam nodded with an obvious look: Exactly. The Asgard?
Jack: Are warned. They have to talk to each other. I gave them the plans. (she nodded) Thor and his buddies were very surprised that we weren't negotiating weapons.
Sam raised her eyebrows: "Surprised"?
Jack: Nodding, blinking... All in the silences...
Sam smiled and continued: I'm still on the copy of the portal key, but Alec has been warned.
Jack: Cool.
They smiled at each other gently, a little intimidated, and a silence fell.
Jack, carefully: You all right?
Sam tilted her head slowly so that he would stop insisting on this subject: Good. How about you?
Jack nodded several times to hide his failure: Good, good.
Silence.
Jack looked at her and tried anyway: Want to talk about’?
She shook her head and looked away.
Silence.
Jack: Have you eaten?
Sam almost begged him with her eyes and smiled nervously: How long are you staying?
Jack: All weekend. (he tilted his head) If you want me around.
Sam pretended to think about it: You know how to get invited. (she moved her hand) Cassie would love to see you.
He nodded and stared at her, trying to decipher her condition, but as usual, she looked away again. There was another silence, much longer this time, and he thought of a solution.
Jack stood up and walked toward the entrance: I know of at least one advantage to living here. Come on.
Sam stood up, now curious: Where?
Jack handed him her jacket and took his: Surprise.
Sam tilted her head: You don't like surprises.
Jack put on the garment: I like to make them. (she raised her eyebrows, delighted at this news) An hour's drive. Let me rent a car and (he looked at his watch) Sands Avenue in about fifteen minutes?
Sam grinned broadly like a child on Christmas Eve: A sports one?
Jack stared at her for a few seconds and insisted: I drive.
She exaggerated a pout of disappointment and he approached her gently. She smiled and waited for him to kiss her to "comfort" her, but his hand rose only to retrieve her cap. She blew out her nose and put on her shoes. Jerk, she thought.

She rolled her eyes at his choice of car when he pulled up to her - a pickup with tinted windows - but promised herself she wouldn't comment. He rolled down the window to let her know it was him, but became increasingly skeptical when he saw her still standing there, thinking.
Jack: Are you coming up?
Sam, with determination: Only if I drive. (he questioned her with his eyes and she added with a touch of mischief) I've already seen the movie. A shovel in the trunk?
He giggled and took off his belt, determined to be her co-pilot.
Jack: Are you coming up?
Sam, with determination: Only if I drive. (he questioned her with his eyes and she added with a touch of mischief) I've already seen the movie. A shovel in the trunk?
He giggled and took off his belt, determined to be her co-pilot.
The choice of the car turned out to be perfectly adequate for his plan: In the rear cabin, he had asked for sleeping bags to be installed and the hotel had offered him the superior range: a mattress with full bedding. Parked in the middle of the desert, they had the most optimal view to admire the Milky Way in all tranquility and comfort.
Sam looked up at the sky: You didn't skimp. (he dodged a smile at this running-gag) See. (he turned his head to her) We find ways to do "normal" activities.
He stared at her and wondered if she was lying when she said she didn't care. He knew she was a pessimist by nature and this kind of sentence made him doubt her thoughts. He grimaced slightly and put his eyes back on the star. He groped for her hand and she gasped slightly when he found it. She intertwined her fingers with his and he stroked her hand with his thumb. She immediately closed her eyes and her breathing quickened. She forced herself to look at the stars again to calm herself. How could he cause so many changes in her with a simple touch, she wondered? Was it the simple fact that he knew that gazing at the Milky Way was enough to fill her? She thought back to his cabin and his old house, but also to Pete and his cop paycheck. Her ex-boyfriend had never shown any sign of jealousy or embarrassment over their pay gap, but she also knew that Jack was a simple, even ascetic man. Yet since their relationship had evolved, the man seemed to be trying to impress her. Was he doing this because she liked to rent high-end sports cars from time to time and had a preference for French white wine, or was he trying to compensate for the fear that she would think he was a loser? She remembers him telling her that he did not have a comfortable childhood and began to feel anxious.
Sam summoned up the courage: Stop spending a fortune on hotel rooms. I'm fine with motels.
Jack swallowed, then after a few seconds of hesitation: Hmm. I didn't pay. (she turned her head to him and he grinned) Gift from the President.
Sam froze: From the President?
Jack turned his gaze back to the sky: The hotel opened last month and has been fully booked for over a year. (He shrugged) He knew I was going to Nevada to cheer up Mitchell and… (She shook her head and closed her eyes, stunned by this statement.) I let him have the presidential suite.
Sam opened her eyes again and chuckled, thinking that he should not have complained: And the first pilot's place, I suppose?
He winced at her cynical tone and understood why she had insisted on driving. It's true that with her, he had tended to keep that place.
Jack turned to grab a carrying bag similar to an expensive cooler and tried again: Hungry?
Sam looked at him suspiciously: More expense reports? (her curiosity gained again and she straightened up to read the label on the bag) "Mizumi"?
Jack rushed to open it first: Don't touch the tuna ones.
Sam, surprised that he chose this meal: Sushi?
Jack corrected and handed her a tray: Makis.
Sam, stunned: You... What?
Jack looked at her: What “what”? (he shrugged a shoulder) I love tuna. (she gave him a puzzled look and he muttered) Leave me. There was no other choice. (she smiled, he looked her up and down and retaliated) You want to get naked and serve as a plate?
Sam chuckled and shook her head: Oh God.
He smiled and took out a bottle of champagne. She took the opportunity to try to steal a bite from his tray.
Jack pushed his tray aside and said in a falsely threatening tone: Hey, I'm sure the shovel is included in the rental. (she gave him a reproachful look and he raised the bottle slightly) Makis and champagne at taxpayers' expense.
Sam grimaced slightly with guilt: That's awful.
Jack popped the cork and poured Sam a drink: Think of it as one less thing in his pocket.
Sam grabbed a drink and corrected him: Stomach. (She raised her eyebrows, sarcastically) "Lack of funding"?
Jack poured himself a drink and tried to change the subject: Hm. (he put the bottle down, held his glass up to her and hesitated) To our new lives?
Sam took a few seconds to think and answered softly: To life.
They toasted.

Walter: - And the Daedalus did take off on time.
Hank signed a file without looking up at him: Thank you Chief. (Walter nodded and left. Bell and Alexander entered) Ha Doctors, come in. (he handed them a document stamped by the Pentagon) Your program has been suspended.
Alexander and Bell looked at each other, Landry rested his interest on his pile of files on his desk.
Bell, stunned: Excuse me?
Alexander read the document.
Hank: Lack of funding. (Alexander discreetly showed Bell the document with General Jack O'Neill's signature on it) The formations that you have already given will be sufficient. (She raised her eyebrows and glanced at Alexander again. Landry was impatient to have them around again) Anything else? A stamp for the parking lot?
Alexander was the first to recover: No, sir. We'll be gone in an hour.

Alexander: Signed by O'Neill.
Daniel nodded several times, slightly uncomfortable: Yeah yeah.... Errh. Sorry I'm late on this. (both doctors frowned and the archaeologist tilted his head with an obvious look to remind them that he was not in a safe place) I do believe I forgot a report in your office.

A halo of bright light appeared on the bridge and a pajama-clad Jack O'Neill, coffee cup in hand, raised his eyebrows in bewilderment. He looked around, recognized the interior of an Asgard ship and felt a little more reassured.
Jack to himself: Déjà vu. (louder) Hello? (he turned around several times) Thor?
Having no answer, he approached the huge window where the infinity of space stretched out before him. When he saw the Earth a little higher up, he winced at the thought of having to fight with replicators again or finding himself in front of a miniature clone of himself and took a sip of his coffee. He walked to the airlock and tried to operate it, but to no avail.
Stuck on this ship with no living souls, he took the time to admire a huge coat of arms with what appeared to be a big arrow pointing to a small circle, surrounded by Asgard script that he could not understand. He decided to approach the control panel and cautiously grabbed a rune and placed it randomly. When he failed again, he tried again elsewhere, but got the same result.
Jack muttered: Where's Carter when ya need -
There was a halo of light in the middle of the room and she appeared, dressed in her robe and just as stunned.
Sam after swallowing the grape that she had just put in her mouth: Sir?
Jack: Oh, Carter! (he added with a touch of sarcasm at the situation) Can't you do without me anymore?
Sam looked around and tried to put on a brave face despite her outfit: What are we doing here?
Jack pointed his cup at her: Déjà vu. (she questioned him with her eyes as she approached the control panel) Don't look at me, I just got here and I don't know where the "here" is. (he handed her the rune) It doesn't work.
She tried unsuccessfully, then gave up and turned around. She scanned the crest and frowned, never having seen such a design on an Asgard ship. It had a Nordic, futuristic feel to it, but the writing circle was more reminiscent of the Ancients.
Sam bowed her head to the inscriptions on the circle: Where is Daniel when we-

Jack exaggerated his enthusiasm: Daniel!
Daniel, incredulous: Sam?
Sam was not in the mood to joke about the situation: Daniel.
Daniel spun around and looked around the room: Where-
Jack spread his arms: Nobody say any names!
Sam and Daniel looked at him strangely.
Daniel looked around as best he could: Where... where are we?
Sam: We don't know. (she nodded for him to analyze the coat of arms and he went to it. She saw the goa'uld bracelet around her wrist and began to panic) Eurrrh, Daniel? (he questioned her with his eyes) Your bracelet.
Daniel turned his attention back to the coat of arms: Yeah yeah. The effects are starting to wear off but the sooner we figure out how to get back...
She left him to study the scenery and focused on the control panel, touching the walls in search of a hidden compartment to reach possible crystals. Jack frowned, sensing that something was missing... Or someone, to be exact.
Jack looked up at the ceiling: Teal'c?
Sam and Daniel turned to him, waited without success, and then looked at him.
Daniel turned his attention back to the crest: On Dakara.
Jack shrugged and muttered, a little offended: It was worth a try, wasn't it? (he saw her abandon the control panel to approach a wall of the ship) Carter?
She tapped on the shiny white wall, then stroked it and frowned at the almost indescribable sensation of the naquadah whirring under her fingers.
Sam: Sir. This doesn't seem to be the same alloy as the usual Asgard ships. It's... strange.
Jack: "Strange"?
Sam turned to him and rephrased: New.
Jack: "New”?
Sam moved her hand: More solid. (She shrugged at his questioning look so that he understands that she had no measuring instrument on her) I don't know.
Jack turned to Daniel who was still very interested in this huge coat of arms: Daniel?
Daniel: It's an arrow.
Jack, in a wry tone: Thank you.
Daniel ignored him: Up.
Jack looked up: With a little circle on top and writing all around it. (He insisted) Thank you Daniel.
Daniel touched the circle: There's a relief. (He frowned and murmured) As if something could be inserted. Jack: Like what?
Daniel: Ugh... (he moved slightly away from the crest) Something. (Jack rolled his eyes, Daniel focused on the small, glowing Asgard scriptures that encircled the famous arrow and attempted a translation by following his reading with one finger) "When heaven, strategy and justice meet love, beauty and..." Um... (he frowned, not sure of his translation) "attraction" or "intimacy." (he turned to them) Something like that.
Jack: "Sex"? (Daniel and Sam glanced at him and Jack defended himself by moving his hand towards the archaeologist) Hey! You're the one who said we could insert-
Daniel repeated himself quickly to refocus the subject: Something like that.
Jack nonchalantly pointed to the end of the arrow pointing to the circle: It doesn't look like-
Daniel grew impatient with his childishness: Oh please. Don't say what I think you're thinking.
Jack restrained himself again from being offended and insisted: -The symbol of the Earth? (Daniel raised his eyebrows and stepped back slightly to get a better view. She approached with a frown at an echo. Jack pointed to the top of the arrow with the round) There?
Daniel pointed to the rune, suddenly very awake: Huuuu. Tuesday. It's Tuesday. (they looked at him strangely and Daniel insisted his gesture towards the rune) Tiwaz! (Sam and Jack still looked at him in disbelief, wondering if he needed a vacation or if this was a symptom of the bracelet not yet detected. Daniel re-insisted in an obvious tone) TIWAZ! The rune of victory. Týr!
Jack, sarcastic: Daniel, there you go again.

An airlock door on their left opened to reveal two Asgard in a more than heated discussion in their languages. They waved their long, thin arms at each other. They reached the level of the Earthmen and looked them up and down. The two Asgard wore blue and gold collars like some of the senior members of their council, but one also wore a small electronic device on the top of her head: a sort of circle connected to several gold metal prongs with other smaller round tips, going down to the right eyebrow arch. This Asgard went to the control panel, which instantly lit up as she approached.

Týr: Greetings. O’neill, Colonel Carter, Doctor Jackson. Welcome to the Sessrúmnir. (Daniel raised his eyebrows but unfortunately did not have time to give a course in Norse mythology) I am Týr. (Daniel stood up smiling, proud of himself, looking at his two friends who didn't seem as enthusiastic as he was. The Asgard looked for a few seconds at the other Asgard who seemed more interested in her holographic screen than the visitors) This is Freyja.
Jack froze: Freya?
Daniel corrected him: Freyja. (Jack breathed a sigh of relief and glanced at Sam, who refrained from rolling her eyes. Daniel exclaimed as if he had just made the discovery of the century) FREYJA! (Sam and Jack looked at him almost startled, thinking he was far too energetic this morning) Earth! (Freyja finally raised her head and looked at Daniel. He pointed again to the coat of arms) The Tauri! (he insisted to Sam and Jack) Sessrúmnir!
Jack, quietly to Sam: He's doing it again.
Sam began to get impatient: Yes, sir.
Daniel to Freyja: Are you Freyr's sister?
Freyja looked at the group, blinked, then looked at Týr.
Týr: Have you ever met Freyr?
Jack grumbled at the memory: Oh yeah, he's a buddy.
Daniel continued his explanation: In Norse mythology, Earth is paired with Freyja.
Jack looked at her: Oh yes, I see the family resemblance. You kinda look…
The two Asgard looked at the earthman with much perplexity.
Daniel glanced at his friend and then addressed Freyja: Jack is very fond of your mother.
Jack's eyes widened in revenge: What?
Daniel continued more seriously: I was saying, in Norse mythology, Sessrúmnir is the goddess Freyja's hall-
Freyja corrected him, eyes still on her holographic screen: Ship.
The earthlings were surprised to hear her speak in their language. They waited for her to say something more but she remained silent, moving runes on the control panel. Sam and Jack turned their heads to Daniel.
Daniel corrected himself: "Ship". (He hesitated) She shared the dead Vikings with Odin who had the Valhalla. He reserved for himself the offensive warriors and that in Freyja, she recovered the defensive ones.
Freyja began to speak in Asgard again. Sam, Jack and Daniel looked at each other, a little lost.
Jack, quietly: Daniel?
Daniel, equally low: I only understand "Aegir". (Jack questioned him with his eyes) Aegir is the commander of the Asgard ship "Valhalla".
Jack gave a silent "Ha" and they watched as the two Asgard continued to argue with each other, their tone rising more and more.
Jack, still low: Daniel?
Daniel continued his presentation as he could not translate: Freyja was considered the gentle warmth of the sun (Jack tilted his head, looked at the Asgard who seemed to be getting angry at the other, and thought to himself that he would not have chosen that metaphor) but also the warrior goddess.
Jack gave a new silent "Ha" and accepted this one much more.
Jack froze: Freya?
Daniel corrected him: Freyja. (Jack breathed a sigh of relief and glanced at Sam, who refrained from rolling her eyes. Daniel exclaimed as if he had just made the discovery of the century) FREYJA! Týr turned abruptly to the Earthlings: The High Council has accepted your request.
Jack raised his eyebrows in surprise: Really?
Týr bowed his head and continued: We have just completed the design of the vessel according to the plans provided.
Jack, even more astonished: Really? (they followed Týr towards the console where Freyja was) I’m just saying... That was fast.
Sam reminded him: Sir. It's just a shuttle.
Týr: We changed it slightly. (Freyja mumbled in Asgard and he corrected) Freyja changed it.
The earthlings wondered if this was a good thing or a bad thing given their interactions. Freyja activated a rune and a 3D hologram of the ship appeared.
Jack: Wow!
Týr: This is the Valshamr.
Sam went to examine the notifications on the screen alongside Freyja and the two men circled the hologram.
Jack, impressed: Nice.
Daniel: "Valshamr" was a cloak of hawk feathers owned by the Goddess Freyja-
Jack: In Norse mythology?
Daniel glanced at him and then ignored him: This cloak allowed you to transform into a hawk and thus cross the nine worlds.
Jack stared at him: Why do you still think I care?
Daniel rolled his eyes.
Freyja showed the data to Sam: Like our fleet, we made it undetectable to your sensors.
Sam nodded, grateful: Thank you.
Daniel surprised by its color compared to the original: It's very... white. (he moved a hand) I mean, compared to your usual vessels.
Sam read the screen: Vanadium. (she looked at Freyja) Like the alloy of the ship we are on, right? (Freyja tilted her head and Sam looked at her friends, smiling at this discovery) The hull is a mixture of this metal, Trinium, Neutronium, Naquadah and Carbon.
Daniel frowned and thought: Wait a minute. Vanadium, vanadium... Vanadis? (Freyja turned her head sharply toward him and blinked blankly. Daniel smiled at his friends) It's another name for the Goddess Freyja.
Freyja began to speak to Týr again in their language. Týr replied in the same tone, even starting to move his arms. Daniel raised his eyebrows, wondering if he had said something wrong.
Jack: Daniel?
Daniel also stunned by the situation: I don't know. (he moved his hand) Understanding their non-verbal communication is complicated, but then without my glasses...
Jack shook his arms at them: Please?! (both asgard stopped their argument and looked at him. Jack continued more quietly) What's going on?
Freyja activated a rune as if she was trying to change the subject quickly and a map of a cross-section of the ship they were currently on appeared in place of the ship. She brought up several pages of information one after the other.
Sam raised a hand to her to stop her: Wait a minute. (she looked at the data and exclaimed) Wow. (Daniel and Jack questioned her with their eyes. She turned to Freyja) You use solar energy and gravity to accelerate propulsion?
Freyja bowed her head and spoke with disconcerting gentleness: Correct, Colonel Carter.
Sam smiled at her, very impressed: Cool.
Jack: Carter?
Sam, enthusiastic: Sir. This technology allows this ship to travel to the other side of the galaxy in seconds.
Daniel, not understanding her enthusiasm: Like the hyperdrive?
Sam shook her head and insisted: No no, much faster. (she moved her hand towards them) Like when Thor towed Prometheus with his ship.
Freyja seemed to ask Týr an incomprehensible question, and another heated argument ensued. Sam froze and glanced at her two friends, but fortunately, silence quickly returned.
Freyja, to Sam: That's correct.
Sam smiled nervously, not sure how to respond.
Jack repeated to himself: Nice. (he smiled at Freyja) We'll take a dozen.
Freyja looked at him without answering and then looked down at the monitor to make the ship's data disappear. There was an awkward silence and Jack questioned Sam who gave him a "I don't know any more than you do" look.
Jack raised his eyebrows in surprise: Really?
Týr bowed his head and continued: We have just completed the design of the vessel according to the plans provided.

Daniel frowned, still in his thoughts: I think I remember that Loki had one too.
Jack and Freyja turned their heads sharply at Loki's name. The Asgard began to talk to Týr again and seemed more upset than the other.
Sam tried to change the subject by pointing to a spot on the screen: Is a negotiation on this technology possible?
Freyja turned her head toward her and blinked silently.
Jack, not finding her particularly cautious on this one: Carter?
Sam nodded: Sir. Imagine the travel time and energy reduction that technology like this would save us. (she moved her hand) The travel time to Pegasus will be greatly reduced even with a ZPM. (she moved her head towards the Asgard and repeated her question) Is a negotiation on this technology possible?
Freyja spoke to Týr again in their language. He gestured again and Sam looked to his colleagues for help.
Jack: Daniel?
Daniel frowned as he tried to translate the two Asgards: "Extra protection" and "violation of protocol" with a succession of numbers... I think.
Sam felt guilty but tried to keep a straight face and repeated Jack's words: It was worth a try, wasn't it?
Jack moved his hands in front of the Asgard: HEY! (they stopped their loud complaints to look at him) Forget our last request. (he moved a hand towards the hologram) Thank you for the ship. (he insisted to Freyja) It is perfect.
She resumed her work and he shook his head at their "friendliness."
Týr: We have been appointed by the High Council to assist you in your task.
Jack juggled his gaze between them several times: You two? (Freyja seemed to mumble something. He stared at her, then looked at Týr to confirm his question) Not that we mind, believe me, but... you seem to... uh...
Daniel, careful: Jack.
Jack looked at Daniel, then at Týr: Not on the same page.
Daniel, quietly: Good catching up.
Jack, also quietly: Thank you.
Týr: The Sessrúmnir houses a project that we have had in common for several thousand years.
Daniel: What project?
Týr: To protect the survival of living species. (he looked at Freyja) Especially those on Earth.
Daniel raised his eyebrows: Like Noah's Ark?
Freyja and Týr looked at each other for a few seconds.
Týr to Daniel: We have no knowledge of this project.
Daniel stammered: No-no-no. Noah's ark is a ship (he moved his hand and rephrased) - a vessel - in the Bible that saved the species from a cataclysm -
A faint white light interrupted him to reveal a hologram of a third asgard on a chair.
Thor spoke to Týr: Týr. You have received a new body.
Týr bowed his head in greeting: Thor.
In the distance, Freyja seemed to mumble something incomprehensible in greeting.
Jack, all happy: Hey buddy! (he gestured with both hands towards him) Thanks, we can move on!
Daniel smiled politely, trying not to hide his embarrassment with his outfit: Hello Thor.
Jack smiled in amusement at his friend as they themselves were naked.
Sam greeted the new arrival with her hand: Hi.
(Hologram) Thor: O'Neill, Dr Jackson, Colonel Carter. Good to see you again. I apologize for not coming sooner. You have met Týr and Freyja.
Jack smiled broadly: Nice people!
Freyja muttered something in Asgard again. All heads turned to her, having heard her this time. Thor answered her, the exchanges rose to a crescendo, and Týr joined the heated conversation.
Jack rolled his eyes: Here we go again.
Sam to Daniel, softly: Daniel?
Daniel, lost in the translation of the exchanges: "Solution" or "permission to experiment" (he frowned) "Arm"? (his two friends raised their eyebrows at his dubious translation) And um... Again "violation of protocol". (he insisted to his two colleagues) Týr was considered the God of oaths, politics, protocols and Law.
Jack repeated himself in a mumble: Nice people. (to Asgard, strongly) HEY! (The three Asgard stopped and looked at him. Jack insisted) We didn't mean to cause you any trouble, fellas.
Silence.
Sam, trying to change the subject: So the ship is operational?
Freyja, gently: Yes, and the steering is automated.
Sam smiles politely: Thank you.
Freyja: You're welcome, Colonel Carter.
Jack and Daniel looked at their colleagues, doubtful.
Daniel, softly to Jack: Female solidarity.
Jack nodded several times, having thought the same thing: Inter-species, yeah.
They smiled at each other exaggeratedly with sarcasm.
(Hologram) Thor: Freyja and Týr will assist the project leaders if needed all the first Týr of your lunar phases.
Jack looked at Daniel, confused: Týr?
Daniel: "Týr" means "Tuesday. (Jack questioned him again with his eyes and Daniel became impatient to translate without having eaten his breakfast) The first Tuesday of every month.
Jack made a silent "Ha." then frowned, wondering why it wasn't easier to say that directly.
(Hologram) Thor: The ship is equipped with teleportation to facilitate the extraction of sentient species. (Freyja approached Sam and handed her 3 small stones with the rune of Tiwaz on it) Rub the stone three times in the direction of the arrow to teleport yourself into the ship when it is in orbit.
Jack and Freyja turned their heads sharply at Loki's name. The Asgard began to talk to Týr again and seemed more upset than the other.

Daniel took one to examine and smiled at Sam: Kendra. (she smiled at the memory, even though the stones were much smaller) I'll pass them on to Dr. Williams and Dr. Dang. (she gave them to him) Uh. I think you should keep one. (she questioned him with her eyes) Alec.
Sam made a silent "ho" and retrieved one: Right.
Týr: Our agreement is therefore subject to the terms Era 65.41.13, Era 84.91.47 and Era 87.28.68 as specified by General O'neill in his request.
Sam and Daniel stared at Jack, who widened his eyes, gave them a brief look of undisguised panic and wondered if there was a reference book somewhere.
Jack to Týr, carefully: Terms that were...?
Freyja spoke sharply in Asgard, and again Týr and Thor joined in the heated conversation.
Jack to Daniel: Let me guess. "Violation of protocol"?
Daniel frowned: "Fertility”.
Sam and Jack turned their heads towards him, surprised: What?
Daniel shrugged: I don't know. (he smiles at Jack) You shouldn't have insulted her mother. (Jack gave him a blasé look and Sam moistened her lips to keep from laughing. Daniel took his explanation more seriously) Freyja was considered one of the fertility goddesses.
A few seconds later, Thor left Týr and Freyja to argue alone while continuing to blink his large black eyes at them several times.
Daniel raised his eyebrows, still focused on the translation: Ha. "Violation of protocol".
Thor turned his head to Daniel and stared at him.
Jack gestured with his hand: Damn. I should have bet.
Thor spoke again in Asgard and his two colleagues looked at Daniel. The latter suddenly felt too much.
Daniel, discreetly to Jack and Sam: What's going on?
Týr answered Jack, as if nothing had happened: The extraction of the developing sentient species, according to your selection, without the use of weapons and under the radar of your governments.
Freyja seemed to mumble something again, but the other two asgard ignored her.
Daniel spoke quietly to his two friends: And I'm not going to translate that.
Jack nodded his head in agreement: Yah.
Týr: That is our agreement.
Jack clapped his hands: Great.
Daniel looked at his watch much closer than usual: I shouldn't hang around or I might-
Jack delighted with the opportunity to make fun of him: pass out?
Daniel breathed out in resignation: Yeah, yeah. (He looked at the Asgard who were talking to each other in their own languages) It was all rather...
Jack: Easy.
Sam also surprised: And fast.
Daniel tried to understand a few words that the Asgard were saying to each other, without success: Rather.
Jack looked at the Asgard with a proud smile: Wow. We're cool.
Sam and Daniel, still in their robes, looked at him in disbelief.
Daniel straightened up to make the conversation a little more serious: It might be a good idea to tell them about the threat of the Or-
(Hologram) Thor turned to them: Our agreement is now sealed.
They were once again engulfed in a halo of bright white light and disappeared from the ship.

Jack to Týr, carefully: Terms that were...?

Jack to Daniel: Let me guess. "Violation of protocol"?

She closed her small travel bag after packing a few things needed for her summons to the SGC. She then placed a protective cover on the bed, opened it and revealed her blue military outfit. She straightened up and moistened her lips with nervousness as she looked at it for a few minutes. The last time she had worn it was at her father's funeral. Her brother had made a derogatory remark to her but that was not all. It was in this kind of uniform that she had made her classes at the Academy and Fifth had made it all up.
She took a deep breath, cracking her neck to the side to relax. She focused on their promises to fulfill their roles: It would have been a poor way to introduce herself to the new leader of the SGC if they had disregarded protocol. She had to keep a low profile.
She brushed her fingertips over the Air Force "Space and Missile Master" wing patch, and despite the sweet memory of her flying days, the designation "missiles" had always bothered her. She had been happy to receive this badge, the logo looked like that of a NASA astronaut that she dreamed of obtaining as a little girl. She concluded that at least this assignment, even if temporary, would be much cooler than her current desk job which was sorely lacking in adrenaline, so finally she began to change.

He ventured his hand under the flounce of her dress to reach the excess fabric but he felt her tense up at the caress.

Jack smiled at her anxiety and placed more kisses on the hollow of her collarbone: Relax... (she winced at the words and felt all life disappear. He didn't hear her respond to his kisses and straightened up) We don't have to if-
He froze. Eyes fixed on the ceiling, she was stunned.
Jack called out to her: Carter? (still paralyzed, he shouted) Hey! (He knelt down in front of her, straightened her up and shook her shoulders) Carter! Hey!
She finally emerged, turned her head toward him, stared at him without recognizing him, then let out a scream. Her scream was heartbreaking, her eyes were panicked and moving rapidly. He wanted to take her in his arms but she tensed up as he approached her. He stopped, stepped back slightly and put his arms in front of him to show her that he was not going to do anything to her.

(PHONE) Sam, extremely nervous: I... I... (she tilted her head and pulled herself together) Let's just say that I worked with Dr. Williams on what may have happened with Orlin and not only did I have to prove that I wasn't crazy at the time, but I also had to do something that I didn't want to do because I had no choice.

(PHONE) Sam had a backward movement: "Protocols"? The Right to Food is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
(PHONE) Jack: I know that.
(PHONE) Sam continued: To violate the Fundamental Rights regarding the treatment of prisoners it is... it is inhumane.
(PHONE) Jack: "Human" is the word, Carter.
(PHONE) Sam: What about the host?
(PHONE) Jack, nervous: I know.
(PHONE) Sam: Whose idea was this?
(PHONE) Jack, hesitated as he would have done the same thing as him: Landry.
(PHONE) Sam, surprised: Hmm. And he was your choice. (she insisted) I know where you stand on the subject.
(PHONE) Jack gritted his teeth: We are at war.
(PHONE) Sam, sarcastic: Desperate times call for desperate measures?
(PHONE) Jack reframed her: Carter.
(PHONE) Sam lower and quickly to prevent an argument: I don't want to participate in this.
(PHONE) Jack softer: And I understand it. (he swallows) I can't do anything about it, ya need to understand it too. (He could have sworn he heard her look up, so he insisted) Carter. I think you belong at the SGC. (she froze) This is not an order, but remember that the IOA can make the decision for you much faster than you think.
(PHONE) Sam moistened her lips and added more calmly: Okay well… I need to think about this a bit before I make my decision. (she hesitated) If that's okay?
(PHONE) Jack: I'll give you a minute. (she opened her mouth and there was silence for a few seconds, so he rolled his eyes) That’s a joke. Take your time. (He quietly blew out the tension) Don't hesitate to call me if you need me, okay?
(PHONE) Sam, a little disconcerted by all this conversation: Okay.
(PHONE) Jack, softly: Good night.

(PHONE) Sam grimaced: There's something I need to know first. (she frowned) Has Nerus been transferred to Area 51?
(PHONE) Jack tapped on his table: Yes?
(PHONE) Sam: Since when do we use torture to get information? (he froze) Blackmail is still okay, but this? We are no better than the Goa'uld or the Ori if we do that.
(PHONE) Jack recalled bad memories: I know.
(PHONE) Sam: We did not torture Osiris, and yet we could have had a lot of information if-
(PHONE) Jack insisted: I know.
(PHONE) Sam resumed the same tone as he did a few seconds ago: And?
(PHONE) Jack huffed and rubbed the back of his neck: I discover at the same time as you all these new... Protocols.
(PHONE) Sam as low: Good night.
She hung up and looked at the phone in her hands. She couldn't help but feel that going back to the front lines meant reducing her chances of having a family. But did she really have a choice?

*That Jack answers “I know that.” when Sam talks about the non-respect of the Right to food is not insignificant for two points: he has a running gag about food and in SG1 2x05 “Need”, when they are exploited in the naquadah mine without food, he said to a guard “You know, I've seen an awful lot of union violations around here. I should probably speak to your supervisor.”. In the episode it is insisted several times that they do not have to eat*
(PHONE) Joe May: Sorry to call you so late but you told me not to hesitate. I got a proposal.
(PHONE) Jack placed his catering bag on the coffee table: Ha, good news.
(PHONE) Joe May hesitated: I... Wait until you hear it. (Jack frowned and the realtor hesitated) The person hasn't seen it and is offering half the price of your asking price.
(PHONE) Jack took a chilling tone: And you call me for that?
(PHONE) Joe May defended himself: The person really insisted and-
(PHONE) Jack became impatient: Listen-
(PHONE) Joe May quickly tried before being fired: Her name is "Thera Jonah". (Jack's eyes widened and there was silence for several seconds) Sir?
(PHONE) Jack, confused: Yeah eurh... One minute, I'm thinking.
Silence.
(PHONE) Joe May ventured after a minute: Sir?
(PHONE) Jack: Still thinking. (he winced as he realized that he would need more time for this decision) I'll call you back.
He cut off the call. Hadn't they agreed to take it easy? He stood up and looked out the window at the city below him to clear his head. Certainly the lights of the buildings were beautiful at this hour but his glance settled on the orange sky without stars. God, she missed her evenings with her telescope. She had hit the nail on the head. And she missed her old job too, she had exchanged her flashlight and microscope for paperwork.
"Half the price" he had announced? God, that was far from wise of her, if it got out that she had gotten the house - HIS old house - at half price, it could be considered a shared asset between them and therefore an argument for court martial. He frowned, then perked up. It was a code. Like "Thera Jonah." He shook his head with an amused smile and called the number again.

CW: *death mention*
There is nothing stranger than an empty house usually filled with furniture and trinkets.
Sam entered the living room: I know it's nothing fancy, but we'll fix it up. (she placed a jar of violets on the mantel and readjusted it so that it was perfectly centered) I'm going to turn off the electricity for a little while, okay?
Cassie put the painting materials on the floor: Are you afraid I'll blow the last bulbs?
Sam dodged a smile and went to open the bay window to air out: I'll just check the installation. (she hugged her goddaughter from behind. Cassie put her hands on her arms and they closed their eyes to enjoy the feel of the naquadah for a moment. Then Sam whispered) Remember. That doesn't mean we won't be there for each other.
Cassie: I know. (she squeezed her hands to reassure her) Even if it's just for a little while. (Sam tried again to chase away the feeling that she had missed the time she could have spent together and pulled herself together as best she could. Cassie stepped aside slowly) I've been thinking. (They looked at each other) I want to be on the list.
Sam looked at her, concerned: Are you sure?
Cassie: Yeah. I want to know right away if anything has happened to you or if you're missing. I would rather be in the anxiety of waiting for news than to be informed only when...
She looked away at the memory of her mother, Sam swallowed and kissed her forehead.
Sam stepped aside: Okay. (Cassie smiled at her to reassure her and nodded to insist on her decision. Sam tried to change the subject) Well… You can start in the kitchen if you want. Yellow.
Cassie grabbed the can of paint and headed for the room: Yellow.
Sam faced the fireplace again, reached into her pocket and pulled out a card, which she placed against the flowerpot.

"Welcome Home"
Cassie frowned at the sight of the wall and exclaimed: The kitchen is already yellow, Sam.
Sam poked her head through the opening: Just a touch of new. Fresh start.
Cassie opened the paint can: Yes, sir.
Sam joined her, Cassie sat on the floor and pulled out her phone.
Sam leaned against a wall and looked at her: No more than three minutes per session. And you stop if you feel the slightest effect second-
Cassie hit the timer on her phone: Yeah yeah, I know.
She concentrated and the brush rose into the air. Sam headed for the stairs and called a number stored on one of the prepaid phones.
(PHONE) Jack picked up: Hey.
(PHONE) Sam, on speaker: Hey. In the basement, do you copy?
(PHONE) Jack: Five by five.
(PHONE) Sam placed the lamps with independent battery so that it illuminates a precise place: Cassie says hi. She's in the middle of an art project right now. Don't worry. The kitchen stays yellow but I was thinking green for the hallway. Or stay on the white, I don't know yet. (He remained silent and she giggled) Sorry. You don't care.
(PHONE) Jack: “Green”?
(PHONE) Sam, surprised that he is interested: Yeah?
(PHONE) Jack, baffled: Eurh. Okay.
(PHONE) Sam frowned: What?
(PHONE) Jack: It's that... Eurh. (he winced) The hallway walls in my old house with Sara were like that. (she froze and he added more quickly) But it's okay you do what you want. This is your home.
(PHONE) Sam, uncomfortable: White.
(PHONE) Jack, equally uncomfortable: White, yeah. (he pulls himself together again) So. Why here?
(PHONE) Sam opened the electrical wall panel: I always liked this place. (She continued to examine the panel) I don't know. It did something to me when you put it up for sale.
(PHONE) Jack: I hope ya feel comfortable there.
(PHONE) Sam unscrewed the panel to see the full extent of the problem: Hmm. I never really looked for a place to feel good. Cassie made me wonder about that. At the time, I would never have dared ask Pete to move to Nevada. (she tilted her head) He had already moved for me. (she swore) Damn! I paid too much for the electrical system! (he blew his nose and she calmed down) I mean, this is a place where I sleep. I felt more at home at the SGC.
(PHONE) Jack sarcastically: Amazing.
(PHONE) Sam pulled new pieces out of her packages: I want it to change. To have a place where I can say I feel at home.
(PHONE) Jack: And on the surface?
(PHONE) Sam: It changed. (she tilted her head) But I made my decision.
(PHONE) Jack: Hmm. And you didn't want to go back to your old address?
(PHONE) Sam: I... I didn't feel comfortable there. Selling it didn't do anything for me.
(PHONE) Jack: Oh?
(PHONE) Sam grinned, lowered: Let's just say being watched there didn't help.
(PHONE) Jack suspected that she was taking refuge in work again: Are you sleeping at the base?
(PHONE) Sam sensed his reproachful tone and reassured him: Just for a little while. Until my furniture arrives.
He was not very convinced by her answer, considering the number of times he had to remind her to go home during all her years.
(PHONE) Jack: Hmm. What about Cass?
(PHONE) Sam: She is going to take advantage of her vacation to spend a few nights with former classmates. She understands the stakes. I wish she was closer, but she's comfortable there. (she glanced around the room) The basement is huge!
(PHONE) Jack: Hmm.
(PHONE) Sam, curious: What did you put there?
(PHONE) Jack, uncomfortable: Eww... Nothing.
(PHONE) Sam guessed his lie: "Nothing"?
(PHONE) Jack confessed: I used to play curling there.
(PHONE) Sam, skeptical: Curling?
(PHONE) Jack: Yah...
(PHONE) Sam resumed her tinkering and insisted: On concrete?
(PHONE) Jack: Just... With a broom...(he guessed she was stopping herself from laughing and he cleared his throat) Let me. My knees are busted, I can't join a club anymore.
(PHONE) Sam, teasing: So you know how to use a broom? (In turn, she guessed he was rolling his eyes and holding back to reframe her. She resumed more seriously) I was thinking of expanding my workshop. My previous garage was getting too small.
(PHONE) Jack: Hmm. (raising his eyebrows thinking about her two motorcycles and cars) Maybe too many wheels.
(PHONE) Sam grumbled again at the breaker: Crap. How old is this house? Is the plumbing in the same condition?
(PHONE) Jack, jaded: You would have wanted the property for half its value?
(PHONE) Sam smirks: I get paid more than you. I wasn't really going to do that to you.
(PHONE) Jack raised his eyebrows that she dared to tease him out of pity: How do you know that?
(PHONE) Sam, skeptical: Are you really asking me that question? (he dodged a smile as he imagined her hacking into her colleagues' paychecks and she added more seriously) I'll mostly just send you the bill for the spare parts, yeah.
(PHONE) Jack looked at his watch: I have to go. I'll be over in two weeks.

Sam entered: General?
Hank looked up for a split second: Colonel Carter?
Sam, with a touch of guilt: Sir. I wanted to apologize for not noticing the Naquadah in the walls before. (Hank frowned and questioned her with his eyes. She tilted her head) My protein traces left by Jolinar.
Hank: Ha. (he turned his attention back to his files) Don't worry. (she nodded slightly so as not to add that the fact that she was totally relaxed during her meeting with Charlotte Mayfield should have tipped him off, or even the echo with the feeling of the naquadah in the walls of the Asgard ship) I got a call from the General Staff. They are glad you are back.
Sam: Ha. All right, thank you. Did you forward on my warning to them to check out all the new construction sites in the major cities in the last 9 months?
Hank became impatient, still staring at his papers: Yes yes. (he moved his hand in annoyance at this conversation that was too long for him and slowed him down on his paperwork) You have an interview with the IOA in room 84. They are waiting for you. I advise you not to delay, you're first on their list. (He muttered to himself) That can't be good.
Sam, cautious: Sir?
Hank pulls himself together: Don't worry. (he tried to encourage her) You helped stop the invasion of the Ori in our galaxy. (she smiled awkwardly and he rested his gaze on his files) There was talk of resuming your public interventions. (Sam's face broke down, he looked up at her one last time, looked at his usual green and black military outfit and stared at her) Get dressed.
Sam frowned slightly at his unnecessary order: Yes, sir.
Notes:
*In my video montage (and in the temporality of the fanfic), Sam says “ How old is this building?” / In my previous paragraph, she said “How old is this house?”*
*Remember that Barrett helped Sam track down Cassandra when she got her powers back. In this timeline (SG1 9x07 Ex Deus Machina), Barrett is watching the building. They both know that potentially they are also being listened to in the VAN, so it is not inconsistent that Sam only gives the "official" excuse to Malcolm about Cassandra and he quickly approves without asking for details or referring to her "disappearance." They act as if it had never been mandated nor speak after cancellation of this request*

CW: *sexism* *mention of miscarriage*
So she had put on her Class A uniform for the interview and Richard Woosley had made the introductions for the other two IOA members: Camille Wray and Luthor Dovelock.
Woosley: Although you seemed to flourish during your short stay at Area 51, I hope you will continue to show your professionalism.
Sam smiled to reassure them but was nonetheless perplexed by this reflection: No doubt about it, sir.
Luthor: Other projects in perspective? (she questioned him with her eyes) Given your age, I imagine that you plan to produce children in the next few years?
She was not the only one to freeze and widen her eyes, Camille and Richard turned their heads towards their colleagues, surprised.
Sam regained her composure: I beg your pardon?
Luthor glanced at his two colleagues and then resumed: Cassandra Fraiser is under your tutelage, isn't she?
Sam frowned: That's right.
Luthor moved the folder in his hands: It says here that you took this job at Area 51 to keep an eye on her.
Sam, cautious: Your point?
Luthor: Maybe it gave you ideas to get your own.
Sam tried to quickly chase away the memory of her miscarriage: I... Eurh... I...
Woolsey moved his hand toward the man: If I may, sir. Regulations do not prohibit members of the Air Force from having children.
Camille, did not hide her sarcasm: And as Director of Human Resources at the IOA, I am particularly interested to know why the male staff did not get this question during their last individual interviews. (she shook her folder in her hands) Or if I have to give you a pen to officially add it right now.
She insisted her questioning with a challenging smile. Woosley glanced at Sam to discreetly nod towards her to reassure her and beg her to excuse his colleague for this bad experience. She answered with a nod, still uncomfortable, and keeping in mind that they could just as well protect themselves from a possible internal complaint.
Luthor coldly, to Camille: Right. (he looked at his file) You asked to continue to keep an eye on R&D in your spare time.
Sam: That's right.
Woosley read the file: The General Staff has authorized you to do so and we have no problem with it.
Sam nodded, grateful: Thank you.
Luthor handed him another file: And you can resume your public interventions.
Sam took the file and called their bluff: The reason I accepted this offer at Area 51 was to have more spare time and given the current situation my concerns are more focused on the Oris threat. I-
Luthor: We have already agreed to a lot of things to make your personal life easier, which is a lot more than some people in this institution.
Sam moistened her lips with nervousness as she realized they meant the permissions to use teleportation to continue Cassandra's medical check-ups. She knew she shouldn't push any further to avoid putting her in danger.
Luthor: And if you can't organize yourself, we advise you to learn to delegate, Colonel. (he turned his head towards Camille) Or maybe the functions of your rank are not adequate to your qualifications?
He and Camille stared at each other for several seconds while Woolsey returned to reading a file. Luthor then turned his head to Sam to indicate that he expected an answer from her. She held her breath and suddenly understood why Landry had insisted she put on her class A uniform when he knew he didn't need to remind her of the protocol: This was a power play.
If there were any doubts about their intentions concerning her public interventions, they had just dissipated them: the President wanted her as a representative of the Stargate project in case it would be made public and who better to do this than a military woman but also a scientist? The IOA confirmed this choice and she became the perfect liaison to avoid a scandal resulting from the perpetual war between the Army and civil institutions.
He had also made an important point that Sam had not thought about when she reintegrated into the SGC: her position in the SG-1 hierarchy. She understood that even though she had obtained this position after all her years in the field, Cameron had obtained and would now remain the leader of SG-1. She had nothing against him, she knew his background and owed him her life as well as many others, but it went much deeper than that. This man in front of her was implying that he preferred that she delegate to continue this government propaganda rather than take more responsibility. And when she saw the silence of the other two IOA members, she realized that discussing this subject was not an option.
Sam stood up: Yes, sir.
Luthor: Now, I suggest you get to work.
She performed a perfect military salute and left.
